Im 99% sure that Liston took an UNPAID dive.

It was a very legitamate KD, but it was a flash KD. He just realized, im past my prime, this guy is far to much for me, **** this im not getting up

I saw in a documentary (I can't remember which one), that Liston told a guy that he could've gotten up but didn't want to worry about the Black ******s. Ali would've beat Liston anyways though.

He was told, you can either lose early. Or take a brutal beating from "The Greatest"

I'm not saying he took a dive. I'm saying that the time doesn't start until the opponent is in a neutral corner, that the timekeeper was wrong, Liston shouldn't have been counted out. The punch was sufficient to put him down, but Sonny wasn't hurt bad enough to stay down for the count, and he beat the count that Walcott gave him.

I didn't mean to imply that you said he took a dive. I was just citing your post as what I took from the fight, in terms of what was controversial.

As far as the count, he could have beat it. I believe. However, that's not a dive, that's quitting. Bit of a difference.

he was down for 17 seconds. I dont think Liston came close to beating Walcotts count.

Doesnt matter anyways, Walcott took the advice to Ring mags editor Nat Fleischer and called the fight anyways.

One of the most hilariously bad officiating jobs of all time lol. Jersey Joe, good champ, terrible ref. I wonder if he got hired after that

Watch it again, Liston starts to get up and when Ali rushes towards him, he lays back down. Obviously he beat the count that Walcott made, because Joe was letting the fight go on. Liston clearly could have beaten any 10 count given him with ease, as he was only caught off balance with that shot, not seriously hurt.

There is much speculation with Liston and some of his fights (mainly with Ali). One rumor is that he threatened to spill the beans about fixed fights (maybe this one) and he was murdered because of it.

The shot in slow-motion looks decent, and Liston was coming in, but it doesn't seem like one that would KO Liston. Liston took some good left hooks from Williams (a big puncher) and didn't go anywhere. Ali's short right hand was nowhere near the bomb that Leotis Martin landed when he knocked Sonny face first into the canvas.

What really makes the KO hard to believe is Liston's reaction when on the ground. He said he was worried that Ali would hit him again.

Maybe so, but it just looked so fake.
