The Douglas who beat Mike

I've watched Tyson-Douglas more times than Ive seen Rocky IV, so it's probably my favorite fight to watch of all time. I really hate when people suggest that Buster's win had more to do with Tyson's decline than his own spectacular performance. Tyson may have already begun his descent from his prime days, but Buster's performance in pretty much every round of that fight was so impressive that I believe that he would have beaten even a prime Tyson on that night. Douglas dominated Tyson from the outside and the inside. His footwork and combinations were amazing for any fighter, never mind a 230lb heavyweight. When Tyson tried to bully him, he used superior strength and leverage to push him off into range for another volley of punches. He did it over and over, round after round. It remains by far the best performance I've ever seen from a heavyweight.Comment

He was on and Mike was off. It was a magical event and still the greatest upset of all time in maybe any sporting event ever.Comment

i think douglas domination of tyson had more to with the stick and move style that tyson had problems with such as fight with tillis, tucker etc . but the difference between tyson in the douglas fight and tucker and tillis fight is that tyson was moving his head , working the body and throwing combintions in those fights . tyson could get away with trying to knock a guy out with one punch like he did against bruno because bruno was too slow and stationery to cause tyson and problems and was scared stiff of tyson but douglas came to fight and win . i also see douglas whipping the tyson from the 2 ruddock fights . tyson was as sloppy as hell in those 2 fights . tyson of the douglas fight reminded a lot of tyson in the lewis fight , tyson stood right in front on douglas and lewis waiting to be hit and douglas had thrown punches tyson responded with only one punch . there are three important things tyson didnt do in the douglas fight move his head , throw combinations and body punches . if all tyson was do out of those three things is throw body punches . i believe tyson would of taken away douglas movement over a couple of rounds and knocked him out .Comment

Perhaps, but the way I see it is that Douglas was doing everything right from the very beginning to the very end of the fight (except when he got a bit lazy in the 8th). It wasn't that Tyson was just standing in front unable to do anything. Douglas was bouncing around giving Tyson all kinds of angles from Round 1. Tyson never stopped trying to win, but Douglas was just deep in the zone. Tyson may not have been at his sharpest because he underestimated Douglas going in, but I like to give Buster credit for staying focused for ten rounds and demonstrating the full range of his talent on the night when it mattered most.
On another note, Dominick Guinn sort of reminds me of Buster. Not so much with regard to their styles, but due to the fact that they were both highly skilled fighters with a lot of natural ability who suffered from a lack of discipline and confidence. Despite his failures, it wouldn't surprise me to see Guinn put it all together one night and win a title with an amazing performance. Of course it won't be as meaningful as JBD's accomplishment because there just no heavyweight fighters that come close to having the aura of invincibility that Tyson had back in the day.Last edited by NachoMan; 12-19-2007, 04:19 PM.Comment
