Oscar and Floyd need to realise there importance to boxing

Sure Oscar De La Hoya has set up Golden boy promotions and Mayweather has set up Mayweather promotions, and they don't want to hard train anymore and want to enjoy there success and rest and enjoy the wealth they had worked hard for, for the rest of there lives.

But to be honest. Both these fighters are the heart of boxing at the moment, and are key contributors to its success. Floyd vs Hatton sold 850 000 PPVS. De La Hoya vs Floyd sold 2.4 Million PPV's.

The sport needs De La Hoya and Floyd to keep winning and winning well. Setting up an eventual rematch in a few years time. Just for the sake of boxing continuing to be popular for a couple more years. Until new fighters like Cotto, Katsidis etc etc have legacies and wide support that can draw in these numbers.

Oscar more so, but both he and Floyd are imperitive to the success of boxing.

They have to ask themselves. We have all the money to retire. But will the sport continue to go gang busters without us? For this reason they need to fight for at least another 2-3 years.

odlh is not fighting another 3 yrs man. he is a shell of what he was as it is already. in three yrs he is like 39! 1 or 2 more fight is all he has. pbf on the other hand should be able to give us at least 5 more yrs. easy, he has never been hurt, and seems to get better. only question here is his hands, and if he really wants to keep fighting. i would not want to see an odlh - pbf fight again though. boring!

Maybe with ODL, but i hope he fights longer. The sport needs him. Hes only 34, not 36.

Katsidis isn't going to build a legacy I'm afraid. He will lose against any decent opponent.

my bad. i though he was 36, but i still think he is faded, and who is he going to fight? he keeps making mega fights with the top guys and losing, and in the mean time depriving us of the big unification fights we need!

Cotto can become a big star along with Kelly Pavlik. Many guys are just coming up.

I don't think another PPV that doesn't live up to buyers expectations will help boxing.

              Maybe if it was free.

yeah i have thought for a long time that if hbo would allow more fights to be non ppv, and save the ppv for the truly huge fights the sport would do much better! money ruins everything!

"For the sake of the sport", WTF. This sport will use you up and spit you out.

Fighters have the right to retire at any time they want to. Even if a fighter is young, say in his 20's, he can retire. Even if he holds the greatest title of them all, Heavyweight Champion and is undefeated, he can retire when he wants.

I'm sick of fighters fighting when they are unmotivated, fight to long and end up in terrible shape afterwards.

I remember watching one of the documentaries on ESPN Classics, I think it was "Sweet Science" or whatever the documentary was, talking about the ***ish fighters in the sport way back. Many of the fighters, including Champions, would fight for money, save up the money, and retire before they were used up. Take the money, and either open up a business or go to college, or both.

You know what I want to see, a young Heavyweight Champion, say 20 years old, fight for 5-7 years, goes undefeated, and retires, never to come back, and goes on to something else successful in his life, proving he doesn't need boxing.

It would be good to see a Jim Brown/Barry Sanders of boxing.

Mayweather should fight two more years to add to his legacy/wallet and for the good of boxing.
