In Karate we used to call this a "sweep-hook", using the the aggression of the opponent against him, while countering in constant flow.

Roy Jones Jr. uses this a lot, including in his fight with Ruiz. In fact, Floyd has decreased the use of the jab, like Roy ended up doing, in exchange for the lead left-hook more often. He also throws less, like Roy ended up doing and goes to the ropes more, like Roy ended up doing. I still hold that Floyd isn't 100% in his prime anymore.
Thats what I thought it was. A hook that you land as your oppinent comes and you move back or to the side.

Muhammad Ali used what was called a "drag hook" albeit with different effects, most notably in his 1977 fight with Earnie Shavers.

If you saw the fight, you will see Mayweather backing up as he threw it allowing Hatton's momentum to increase the effectiveness of the blow... another indication of how a check hook is used to turn defense into offense.

Still only a very speedy fighter such as Ali or Mayweather or Jones would be able to get away with that sort of a punch while backing away.

It is a way to keep someone from throwing at you, in planting your foot inside someones foot or pressing your hand against their arm while you are in close is a way to "check them". A check hook is what you use to keep aggressive boxers from lunging at you.

It is not a term "Mayweather created" When floyd landed that punch, Steward was the first to call it "That was a Beautiful check hook"
There were 3 distinctive times Floyd threw that shot. The first was behind Hatton's head, the second caught him on the ear around the back of the head, and the third landed right on the money in the corner of the jaw.

It's beautiful to see the chronology. Floyd is a precision artist. He was perfecting, adjusting, and ultimately; executing the shot.

Steward said it when it happened.

Your pathetic, Delahoya used to throw that same punch. Even back then he had a name for it, not the check hook, hbo would even comment about his left hook/uppercut. Stop trying to act like you know what you're talking about.

My Uncle also commented this during the fight. And He told me not everyone had the skills to use it correctly. But told me about Ali, Oscar and others that I can't remember. God knows I was high as a kite that night. In spanish he called it "torniao' hook", or something like that. To be honest I was not paying too much attention as I was playing dominoes and it was my turn...

They teach you this in boxing. Look at the angles a prime Vargas used to give his opponet, especially in the Quartey fight.
