He isn't doing it for their wellbeing either.

Does he really need to push them off with his elbow in their throat?

And FYI pushing someone off with your elbows in their ribs doesn't feel very good either.

        Bottom line...

From what I noticed, Cortez stepped in in the early rounds to establish control and not let the holding get out of hand by either fighter.
Not just Ricky. Then issued warnings to both fighters.

After a few rounds, he let them work it out by verbally cautioning them, and occasionally, making contact with with their gloves to lower them away from their bodies. He verbally cautioned Floyd on several occasions, too.

He was justified in taking a point away from Ricky after a blatant rabbit punch while Floyd's body was half way out of the ropes.

I've only seen clips of the re-play since.

I suppose the NSAC would be all over it if Cortez's actions were as detrimental to Ricky's performance as it is being made out to be.

Of course, not, he unloads with his right after he does it, but it is still not intentional to cut, although, who knows, it is an Old School move and at least back then, I bet they were doing it to hurt and destroy.
It's just with Floyd, you rarely see him do something intentionally illegal, like rabbit punching, hitting the kidneys on purpose, low blows, etc.

Please. He was all over Ricky from the start, breaking them up at the merest contact.

The first 4 rounds were crucial to Ricky and he ended up absorbing a lot of blows due to the excessive breaking up.

And as for anyone questioning Cortez, nothing will happen because it was a Brit.

If it is intentional to the throat, my guess, yeah, it pushes the head back so that you cannot aim your punches back in return.
If not, sweat can slip the elbow up to the chin and of course any movement. You aren't worried about placement of a specific spot, just placement on the smothering object.

I don't believe Floyd was deliberately trying to strike Ricky with his elbow like the photo makes it appear.

A simple review of the fight where Floyd does raise his elbow would prove it to be otherwise.

And Cortez would, no doubt, have warned Floyd and even taken a point if it continued too, as he should.

Dude, I just watched the fight for the third time. Floyd hits Ricky with forearm smashes at least 3 times (not including the close range elbow digs), Ricky comes back viciously with punches to the face. One of the forearm smashes was just before Ricky put him out over the ropes.

Cortez was biased, point-blank. He took his preconceptions into the fight and Roger Mayweather was still complaining about holding even though it was Floyd doing the holding.
