It is legal. If you target someone's throat, guess what ? I guarantee you miss it !

Anyway, I have not heard of a boxer dying as a result of a throat punch....so it's effects are either greatly exaggerrated, or it just doesn't happen all that often.

In 1997, Nelson lost his title to Genaro Hernandez when beaten on points in twelve rounds. He was almost disqualified when he accidentally hit Hernandez in the throat after the bell to finish round seven and Hernandez lay on the floor for several minutes. However, Hernandez chose to continue, allowing Nelson to lose by the more honorable way of the judge's decision.

well it all depends cause u can hit a boxer in the side of the neck no problem if he drops his guards.
I was hit in the neck a few times last week its annoying and it does hurt afterwards it was by a counter puncher and a very fast welter it was only 2 jabs from the counterpuncher and from the fast welter a right hand.
amatuer boxers like me im sure learn to tuck there chin in from gettin punched in the neck lol.

Notice the part where it says, "after the bell" ? I guarantee that was the bigger problem......one for which he was NOT DQ'd.

It is legal but I don't think fighters purposefully aim for the throat. **** if you look at the Pavlik vs Taylor fight. When Taylor had Pavlik dazed and almost KOed him Taylor hit Pavlik in the neck and that is what stunned Pavlik. It wasn't a punch to the chin.

There's some interesting places you can hit someone to cause damage, in the throat is one, over the heart is another. You land hard in either place and it really saps your opponent's energy.

my former coach and amatuer champion told me on a couple of occasions, when he was down on points and times were desperate - he'd punched opponents in the throat.

Nasty attack - but in truth - how can you tell the difference between deliberate and accidentally punching it?

It happens just not as much as you might think. If your not sparring with a person that doesn't know what they are doing, you won't get hit there.
