I thought it would go to the cards too, and nothing wrong with thinking that. Had Mayweather let his hands go he could have stopped Baldomir, stopped Judah (despite the low blow), and at least rocked Oscar, who was a sitting duck for Mayweather's speed for most of the fight. Those performances left people feeling that Mayweather was content to just coast to easy decisions and not put himself in the line of fire.

As for Larry Merchant, he's done that many times; those questions are scripted ahead of time I'm sure...HBO has to begin "hype" on the next fight if they possibly can by asking a fighter about his next opponent when it's the last thing on his mind. With HBO's huge investment in Jermain Taylor flushed down the toilet they are probably begging Mayweather to fight again next year against a name opponent.

Here's my problem with Merchant's comments, though ( and BTW, I'm inclined to agree that the questions were pre-packaged, and Larry simply failed - or refused - to deviate from the script):
      - Rather than crediting Floyd for the win (other than beginning and ending the interview with "Congratulations"), he instead kept asking what Hatton brought to the table that allowed him to fight that way. Then shoving Cotto, Paul Williams, etc. down his throat, whereas just about any other fighter would be granted a gimme after coming off of a year like this, no questions asked (literally).

      - Rather than admitting Floyd was the better man, Larry kept asking Hatton what he did right. And to his credit, it was Ricky who kept coming up with "I ran into a better fighter", or at least responses along those lines.

Larry's agenda reminded me of a post-fight comment from Pernell Whitaker (though dammit if I can't remember the actual fight). Whitaker won, as usual, only to be attacked by Larry, leading Pernell to respond, "Damn, I won the fight, but I lost the interview."

Maybe he should prove he his p4p best also by walking on water...

I personally feel that mayweather has sealed his legacy but to put the icing on the cake he should face Cotto, but at the same time if he decides to hang up the gloves now, then we still cannot take anything from what he as achieved.

            good article.

jake should be making appearances on hbo countdowns over a plagarizing dirtbag like ron borges, or writing for a big magazine like the ring, but they would never hire him since he speaks the truth about oscar de la fishnet.

              Idiots!!!

Whoever said that Floyd should fight at Middleweight is an idiot!!!! He has jumped 5 weight classes and defeated solid competition... People don't understand what that means... Let Manny P fight at Welterweight and he would be a punching bag.... Things change when you move up!!!

He first needs to unify or at least defeat one of his principle opponents at welterweight: Miguel Cotto or Paul Williams. This would wipe away all criticism of his cherry picking opponents. That in itself will propel him up the ATG list and put the icing on the cake. But if he really wants to be one of the best he must take a a big risk. He must travel to 160 and take a belt from one of the recognized belt holders. It doesnt have to be Pavlik, Sturm would do and Floyd could hang his hat with the big boys, walk the walk instead of just talk the talk. I think he has a good chance to pull it off. For Floyd things really get interesting from here on out, that or he goes away but I don think he will be able to let the spot light go.
Good post. I agree, if he fights Cotto and Williams and wins that would silence a lot of critics. I don't know about going to 160 though. That is a big jump for a guy that started off as a Super Featherweight. I do think he might have a chance against Strum though. He's 3.5 inches taller than Floyd and I don't know about his reach. This would surely put him in there with the GOATs.

This is a long shot and I would be happy if he just fought Cotto and called it a career. It's amazing how much more respect he's getting after this Hatton KO. 24/7 really made it seem like Floyd was a little ***** with brittle hands who wants to retire and made Hatton seem like a ****ing beast!

Very clever... Floyd wouldn't be getting the respect if he hadn't knocked him out. Everyone would be complaining about the judges scores and would be complaining even more about the Ref doing a ****ty job.

I really don't want Floyd to retire but if he does I can respect that...

Manny P already started out as a flyweight, though (actually, just above Strawweight). He's already covered nearly half of the existing weight classes in his career. Weight-wise, they've both covered the same amount of ground, though Floyd more so at/near the highest level.
