Watt slams 'deplorable' Cortez refereeing performance

Jim Watt blasted referee Joe Cortez for his "deplorable" performance in Undefeated.

The referee came under fire for refusing to let the action flow as Ricky Hatton's dream of becoming the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world were shattered by Floyd Mayweather.

The Hitman was KO'd in the 10th round in Las Vegas and while Watt readily admitted that the Pretty Boy was just too good for Britain's finest, he was also quick to point out that the referee did him few favours.

"I thought Joe Cortez's performance was deplorable," he told Sky Box Office.

"Within five seconds he was breaking up the action and it was as if it was part of the plan.

"Every time they got together, before he even waited to see if they were going to throw a punch, he jumped in - and that suited Mayweather."

Watt was slightly happier with Hatton's performance, even if it ended in defeat.

He believes the Hitman did all he could, but at the end of the day, just came up against a fighter at the very top of his game - and the boxing tree.

so now Cortez is a bad ref for not allowing Hatton to hold and hit? this is the USA, not England. we follow the rules and the cream rises to the top.

Explain why Mayweather was allowed to duck to the ground and hit and hold in later rounds.

stfu man, the referee was inept, saved Floyd and ****ed ricky's chances with his bull****

        here, you might need this

that was utter destruction last night. to think Hatton had a chance going in was absurd. to still think he had a chance after seeing it transpire is bordering insanity.

Hatton could have brought a partner into the ring with him and still lost last night

Bull****. Go watch rounds 1 and 2. Hatton was picking him off and rockin his head. Floyd only got punches away when he was allowed to get away by the ref constantly breaking it up.

I hope Cotto beats the **** out of Mayweather. Not because I dislike him but because he had the ref set up for this one.

The ref broke them up quickly sometimes, other times they were justified.
Overall Cortez didn't do as good of a job as I thought he would, only warning Mayweather once about his elbows and forearms, but what happened already happened so there's no use to keep dwelling on it IMO.

I see what you're saying about the dwelling. But it bothers me to see posts about Mayweather 'murdered' Hatton when he had all the advantages and the fight reffed to his style and Ricky had the opposite with the fight reffed to his detriment.

I guess the myth of Mayweather lives on, but I know what was gonna happen if the ref reffed it like a normal ref and let things flow.

bottom line is when Cortez made them actually box (and this IS the sport of BOXING), Mayweather completely destroyed that poor kid. Rounds 8-10 were the boxing rounds with actual fighting taking place as opposed to a royal rumble/WrestleMania/free for all, and Hatton got obliterated. Mayweather made it look like Hatton didn't even belong in the same ring with him. It was utterly embarrassing for your boy, and I hope you can someday get over this terrible tragedy that everybody who knows anything about boxing saw coming a mile away and 6 months ago.

So diving inbetween the ropes to mislead someone would be following the rules then? I honestly think Cortez was breaking it up too early, when Hatton started to do a little damage Joe was right in there to pull them apart too soon.
