Several things strike me as strange in this article:
Donaire told us that he had only one month to train for the title defense against Luis Maldonado because he was “stood up by Gary Shaw” even disappointedly revealing that Shaw had Maldonado’s family “sitting together in the front row while my family was at the back, way behind them.”Donaire fought December 1. Here's a press release from October 19:They cant just give me one month’s notice for each fight.
SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING will present a world title tripleheader as its season finale featuring light heavyweight champion ANTONIO “MAGIC MAN” TARVER, super welterweight champion VERNON “THE VIPER” FORREST and flyweight champion NONITO DONAIRE, on Dec. 1.

Donaire would've had to know about him fighting in December before the press release would've been sent out. And in the exceptionally unlikely circumstance that he didn't? He still would've had 42 days or so to cut weight. That's a six-week training camp if he starts running right there.
He also criticized Shaw for other failures saying “they never gave me money for my expenses and I had to borrow some money to help me go to the Philippines in order for me to lose that weight.”Did he have to go to the Philippines to lose weight? Couldn't he have done training camp in America? I'm just saying, that's a voluntary expense that one can't necessarily blame Shaw for not paying, unless it was a scenario that they had worked out ahead of time.He said Shaw had objected to his training in the Philippines which Donaire said “was my choice.”
Shaw had Maldonado’s family “sitting together in the front row while my family was at the back, way behind them.”How is he so certain of arrangements that Shaw may or may not have made for Maldonado? The world champion said he knew he was flying to Connecticut on the Monday night before the fight only that morning and “we had to rush everything." In stark contrast, Maldonado’s plane tickets were already scheduled two weeks before everything but I didn’t even know when I was flying out or know anything really.”
And a lot of this stuff -- training camp, hotel rooms, etc. -- sounds like arrangements that are typically taken care of by a fighter's manager.
But despite all of this, I have to concur with Ryan. There have been several fighters who have complained about Shaw in recent years. So while a lot of Donaire's complaints sound strange to me, there may be some truth underlying the tension.Comment

You bring up a lot of valid points. I belive its the manger but then again i had a promoter pay for my hotel, food and traveling expenses when i fought pro -but then again i was a late sub.Comment

My main man Mr. David, long time bro. Nonito's weight gain after the Darchinyan fight was intentional. He had been lifting weights to bulk up before the fight, then he was going to take off all the weight while preserving the increased strength. Perhaps he had a harder time than he anticipated.
Somewhere in the middle is the truth, but if Donaire is upset he has an excellent ally in manager Cameron Dunkin. Few managers have the influence over promoters that Dunkin has.Comment

Yep, you were probably saving the promoter a lot of money and grief. For a fighter on Donaire's level, I'm surprised his well-respected manager didn't take care of the issues.Comment

I agree. That's why I was surprised to read his complaints. Dunkin's respected. And his guys are loyal -- you don't see Kelly Pavlik leaving him for Al Haymon. My main man Mr. David, long time bro. I thought Donaire had exactly the performance he needed, even if taking Maldonado out took longer than he desired. But you're right, there's some truth somewhere in the middle. The question is whether we'll get the answers or instead this all will play out behind the scenes or in one-sided ammo dumps.Comment
