It just seems to me that if one eyes the biggest payday in one's life.. one looks around and sees that no other engagement can come close to giving one a million-dollar payday...one is left with no options but to make concessions to ensure that the payday comes...

In such a situation, it shall not be difficult to concede. It's a no-brainer. Pride will have little to do with it.
