In A Great Year For Boxing, What’s Gone Wrong at Light Heavyweight?

By Cliff Rold - An undefeated former Olympian as champion; an aging Hall of Famer with some quality rounds left in him; a solid set of tested veterans; two dangerous heirs apparent chomping at the bit. In an excellent 2007 for the sport of professional boxing, that description of any weight division sounds like explosive par for the course.

Unless that weight division is Light Heavyweight.

The description of the players is correct. It’s the explosion that has been lacking. 2007 got off to a promising start for the 175 lb. realm, but a series of cancellations, ducks, and seeming disregard from the two men who hold the strongest claim to the label of ‘champion’ have brought us to the ultimate example of a division gone wrong: [details]

Quick correections need noting from the author:
    1) Zsolt Erdei won the BRONZE; don't know why I typed Gold. I knew that already.

    2) Drews is fighting Danny Green, not Paul Briggs on 12/16. Confused my Australians in haste.

    Apologies to regular readers.

    Cliff

I don't care if he hops around; I do care if he is going to be acclaimed as champ and not fight contenders in the class.

147 and 168 are easily my favourite divisions in boxing right now.

Too much talent in both of them

Chad Dawson is the man in this division, he will beat every single belt holder and contender in this division. It's unfortunate he hasn't faced any top opponents since his win against Tomasz Adamek, but he will face Adrian Diaconu as his next opponent. The WBC has stated that both promoters have now 30 days to set a deal otherwise they'll go to purse bid on Jan 7. According to Diaconu's promoter, the odds are pretty good that purse bid will be held.
