The $750,000 buyout is correct, it wasn't $1 million. And it was a wise investment as at the time, Arum and Golden Boy had no intentions of doing business together, even with the amount of $$$ involved in an Floyd-GLH fight. Golden Boy wanted control over any promotion involving Top Rank. Arum wasn't willing to concede, but even if he did allow the fight to happen while Floyd was still his fighter, that would've meant Floyd giving up 30% of his guaranteed purse (which was somewhere between $10-12 million, before PPV upside) for the Oscar fight.
So anyway you slice it, by spending $750,000, he saved well over $3 million. And is now in a position to earn a payday that even exceeds what he made against Oscar. And again, without a promoter dipping into his pockets.
Had Floyd fought and beaten Margarito, he'd have received about as much respect as Williams is presently getting - none. Much like nobody gave Floyd credit for beating Baldomir, after previously bitching he was just a paper titlist and wanted to fight Spinks at 154 for another paper title rather than face the "real" welterweight champ.
I don't know what he made off of the Baldy fight in PPV revenues (if there was any upside as the event didn't exactly fare well for the amounts Goossen had to pay out).Comment

how can people say it was a smart move to pay all this money to duck a man. that is the most cowardly move in the history of boxing. and mayweather could still have fought margarito and then fought dlh later but he only chose to get out of his contract to duck the baddest man on the planet antonio margarito!!Comment

Hey Ray!!!! I've been here. Where have YOU been? Sometimes, I just lurk, especially when there's nothing new for me to learn. (ie. When Mayweather threads are too many etc. Too much repetitive and uninformitive posting.) The fight is next week though, so I am active!!!!!!!!Comment
