The most overrated of all time...

    fight is Holyfield-Tyson I.

Does anyone actually think this fight even belongs in the discussion for fight of the year? I can't believe that 1996 didn't have a better candidate to send through.

This really does seem like one of those instances where the hype of the event contributed to people thinking it was exciting.

Am I echoed in my distaste for this fight, or am I just a froob at picking good fights?

I've always respected your opinion, and I do so now, but I think you're a million miles out here.

This fight was a good 'un. Could never be overrated due to the two characters that were in it.

I think Benn-Eubank was a touch overrated. Being English and all that, I'll take some heat for this, but never mind.

Not that I'm insinuating Benn - Eubank was in 1996, it wasn't, that's just my counterexample.

It got 1996 fight of the year, and 1996 upset of the year. Ol' "Iron" Mike showed heart, he refused to stay down.

            I enjoyed Barrera-McKinney a hell of a lot more than Holyfield-Tyson.

I hate heavyweights, but I can be swung by a good heavyweight fight. I thought Bowe-Holyfield I definately deserved FOTY.

Holyfield actually fought a lot like Bernard Hopkins when he beat Tyson. He clinched a lot, and didn't really war it up with Tyson. Tyson basically seemed confused, and threw one shot at a time, like he did against Lewis.

I fail to see why this "war" was so great?

Every other FOTY that I have seen is better, even Gatti-Ruelas and Gatti-Ward III.

                good thread.

holyfield-tyson 1 was a good fight and all but not fight of the year worthy.

barrera-mckinney or gatti-rodriguez should have won.

                bowe-golota 2 and liles-littles 2 were great fights in 1996 as well.

yea, that was a hell of a slugfest. Definitely deserved the FOTY award.

I liked Tyson-Holyfield, but it didnt deserve that FOTY. but you know, big names often get more recongnition than they deserve.
like look at Ali. he was fun to watch and all, but did he really deserve the FOTY award for his fight with Spinks? Hell no, especially considering Norton-Holmes was the same year.
and I dont encyclopedic boxing knowledge, so I cant really say the year fights happened, but I have a hard time believing that Ali's fights with Liston and Foreman were really the 'best' fights that year. I have an even harder time believing that Ali vs. Doug Jones was the best tha t year.

but big fights with big names are going to get awards evren if theyre not necessairly the actual 'best' fights of the year.

foreman-young won fight of the year over franklin/saad muhammad-marvin johnson

that has got to be the most outreagous choice ever.
