      Popular as in "loved:? Maybe.
Popular as in "famous"? No way, Ali and Tyson are more famous.

JOE LOUIS was an Internationally known athlete for sure, but wasnt popular at all oversees, especially not in GERMANY.

Joe Louis was at first only a hero of the blacks, but after Max Schelling and the **** party became wrongly linked, Joe Louis's knockout of Max Schmelling in the rematch made him a hero of America.

Obviously, the Germans, who strongly believed that the Aryan race was the strongest race of them all, and could not be beat by any Negro on the planet, despised Joe Louis.

Welll muhammad ali rose above the sport, As did louis, But sadly my generation has forgotten him, I can walk through the hall and ask 10 people who joe louis is maybe 5 will know who he is, I walk down the hall at school and ask who muhammad ali id guess 9 out of ten will know, Sadly outside of boxing fans louis has been legitamitly forgotten,

He's popular in the sport because he gets rocked in damn near every title defense.
