The ring belt is chosen by a panel of boxing writers and awarded to the fighter they consider to be the best in that weight class, regardless of which alphabet titles they hold.

In reality though, you can only judge a belt by the fighter who holds it, although the WBC is probably considered the most prestigous, if it is held by a bum who got lucky and loses his first defense, its not worth a thing.

Fighters make belts, not the other way round.

Whichever one the most talented boxer in that division holds. WBO, WBA, WBC, IBF are all the same. The Ring are a bunch of writers that never wore a jock strap in their life pontificating about something they know little about.

newb question...but undisputed champion of a weight division means he holds every single belt for that weight class?

To hold every single belt is pretty much impossible, there are a lot more organisations than just the big four, but only someone who holds multiple belts can be called undisputed, unless their total is matched by another fighter. David Haye is classed as the undisputed cruiserweight champion because he holds 2 of the big 4 belts. However, if the other 2 belts were held by the same fighter he would not be undisputed.

                  Fighters make the belts.

Larry Holmes made the IBF belt back in the day when lesser champions held the more respected belts.

Naito(eho beat Wonjongkam or whatever lol) at 112

                    Mijares at 115

                    Vazquez at 122

                    Linares at 126

                    JMM at 130

                    Junior Witter at 140

                    Mayweather at 147

                    Forrest at 154

                    Pavlik at 160

                    Calzaghe at 168

                    Dawson at 175
