Boxing as main Stream Sport in the USA???

Today, it just hit me the fact that boxing is not covered well enough in the United States media. By that I mean, mainly ESPN. I know they have their boxing classic nights at ESPN Classic during the week, but that's about it. But since I don't live in the continental USA, I can not fully appreciate my concern. As far as I remember, it took Ali, Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard and maybe De La Hoya to make the mainstream media more attentive to Boxing. MayWeather needed to fight Oscar to get more popular. I remember ESPN showing ONLY PICS, but it was something. Even text updates during a fight. Now, ESPN is nowhere to be found near boxing. Is there a weekly boxing program worth watching on cable??? Other than HBO and ShowTime Saturdays???

Maybe I am wrong, but Today other than Bonds and A-Rod, ESPN also talked about NasCar, and MLS. So, they do follow other minor sports like Horse Racing ($), Car Racing, Soccer, Bull Riding, Steroids Use and College Sports more often than they do Boxing. It's a ****ing shame.

Like posted in another thread, Boxing still is main stream sport in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Philipines, and few countries in Europe. Is there a "state" in the USA that has the local media giving boxing more importance due to local heroes???

In Puerto Rico you don't get THE REAL PPV STATS since 50,000 PEOPLE pay the event, 10,000 - 12,000 will assist to the event NYC or even Las Vegas, but the other 1,000,000 will watch it too. By this I mean, we make a whole party and you get over 50 people watching the fight on a single Big Scree TV. Other go to Bars and Pubs, and hotels. And can't forget those who "steal" cable or dish and get those PPV for free. I am used to talk about boxing almost in a daily basis. (duh! I am getting addicted to this website) Our local news report will have somekind of coverage even with relatively unknown boxers.

Anyway, I will like to get some feedback, maybe I am wrong.

Boxing is not and will not ever be a big time sport in the US. I think boxing fans are in denial when they think boxing can reach the height that it had in the past. It is a niche sport and is doing okay in that regard, I don't see any problems.

I think once there are more guys like the p4p best Floyd Mayweather that boxing will get more attention. In the 90s it wasn this bad and I dont kno about the 80s. ABC and NBC won't ever get boxing back I dont think but ESPN or ESPN2, or a TV network might start showin some like TBS TNT. But there's gotta be more talent in boxing and right now Heavy division no one watches, Cruiser division not a lot of people watch, super middleweight and middelweight ask how many people walking down the street if they know Joe Calzaghe or Kelly Pavlik

So, no extra coverage to be found on cable then. Anyway, if there is a program worth watching, please post time and dates.

that may be the ******est thing ive ever read on this board. its BECAUSE of people like floyd that boxing isnt as popular. what did you hear from casual boxing fans after he fought DLH? and dont lie, you know the majority of people who are casual fans were saying, "that was boring and a dissapointment". not only that, Mayweather's public persona is unattractive and offensive to some people. thats something even HE knows which is why he did the Dancing With The Stars thing, but it really didnt do much. No one really cared and he was hardly talked about outside of the Boxing world. Unfortunately, in order for boxing to be a mainstream sport again, it needs more casual fans and casual fans dont want to see Mayweather. Ask around. I bet you anything that is the general consensus from the casuals.

You hit it right on the button. Anyone who doesn't understand the true science of boxing wants to see a brawl, slug fest or whatever you want to call it. That's one of the reasons why MMA has gained a lot of popularity. They don't really have a standup defence like smooth boxers do which means they slug when standing.

The clinching doesn't help boxing either. Nobody wants to see 2 guys hug for 12 rounds.

When poker gets more coverage than boxing on a sport network you know you're in trouble.

POKER IS NOT A SPORT MOTHER****ER.
