Dynamite,I remember hearing that Mitch used to spar with Larry back in the day, and he mentioned it in an interview a short time before he fought Tyson. I think Renaldo Snipes may have been there.Tony posted on another site, saying that
was the reason they never let him and Larry work out on media days.
You're right about that. When Holmes fought Renaldo Snipes in Pittsburgh, I was at his training sessions and got photos with Holmes, Snipes, "Blood" Green, Bernardo Mercado (always liked him) and Grady Daniels.
I was talking to Green, who was very flattered that someone would want to spend time BSing with him when those other guys were around. He was so cool to talk with. Until I asked him "how does it feel to be Larry Holmes' sparring partner?" I said it innocently. He went off! "Man, whut you sayin'! I ain't no MF sparring partner for NOBODY!" He got that off his chest and then kept talking with me like nothing had ever happened. I got the impression that all his wires weren't wired just right...
Anyway, back to the story. I didn't see Tubbs there during that week I was there, but I spoke with Green several more times and he claimed to "own" Holmes and promised he would be the next champ. When I saw them spar, they basically were fighting at long range, trying to "power jab" each other.
Holmes won but it was some serious stuff when they sparred.
Don King said that he had to stop Mitch Green and David Bey from sparring each other because it became "too competitive." I can see Mitch Green wanting to show up anyone he spars with. Look at what he did at 0400 in Harlem! How can anyone not like that guy!Comment
