Sure he's a dirty fighter.
I can't for one, think of something I respected him more for than his ability to find a way to win fights. It's not like he becomes frustrated and resorts to cheap tactics on the regular..........he simply makes it a rough fight early.
The first rule of boxing is to protect yourself at all times. It's a fist fight, and things happen. For one I know that if you put a Cagey ex Con in the ring with a pair of gloves on and tell him he's getting paid to beat someone up..........he'll beat them up. If he doesn't hell find a way to get out with the W so that he can keep getting the pay checks.
That's also why I'd hazard to guess he was so adamant about promoting himself.
Hopkins is the last guy on Earth who would get scammed out of his Wallet.

Most of the haters on this board are Calzaghe fans and/or Europeans.
Others might not like the way he fights or some of his tactics outside of the ring.
I personally don't care, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I do think the man deserves respect for his accomplishments. I don't care if anyone thinks so and so is better or could beat him, thats cool, I just dislike when people use weak arguments to discredit his achievements. He has a great story, inside and outside of the ring, and love him or hate him, he was and still is great for the sport of boxing.Comment

if you can't out box someone you shouldn't be able to frustrate them by grab and headbuttinng.bernard gets away with way to much.hatton also gets away with his excess clinchingComment

Let's put Hopkins' career in perspective. He started at light-heavy, lost his first fight. So he starves himself down to middleweight where he has success against poor and then decent competition. He earns a shot at the title against the only great middleweight he ever faced (RJJ) and loses. He then fights an 18-2 Segundo Mercado, gets knocked down twice (so much for the granite chin stories) but is lucky enough to escape with a draw. Fights Mercado again in his next fight for the vacant IBF title, which he wins. He then enjoys a long reign of successful title defences against mediocre opposition EXCEPT Trinidad and De La Hoya, not true middleweights. When he finally meets a good, full fledged middleweight in Jermaine Taylor, he loses, TWICE. So, he decides to skip the super middleweight division (gee, I wonder why) and moves up to light heavy to fight a washed up Tarver (lost 2 of his last 5) and after that a puffed up junior middleweight in Wright. A very good career, but ATG, I think not.Comment
