All Puerto Ricans do that to get comfy fighting without headgear and to feel the punches.

We had a guy in our gym who made over 100 fights in his homeland and went 10 - 0 at our gym fighting good opposition. He took out the bavarian champion in 30 seconds but secretly he fought pro too 5 - 0 than they caught him.
He sparred at 78 kg with 18 ounce gloves without headgear against a guy who was boxing for many years at 90kg with 8 ounce gloves with headgear. Now that's crazy...

Cotto's opponent maybe had 18 ounce gloves or was not supposed to hurt him or maybe it was muffin handed Paul Malignaggi ;-)
