Alot of good points there.. however I disagree with the arguement that the scoring is bad because it may confuse judges. The judges need to be held to a higher standard than that, whether or not they at times seem not to deserve it.

I like the idea of scoring half-points, I can see where it is cause for concern, but hopefully it'll turn out to be positive

the solution to boxing is 10 judges so no one gets robbed or at least have to pay more for it

if theres a problem with scoring (which im not convinced there is) adopting muay thai style scoring could be the answer. Muay thai, whilst still using the 10 point must system also has a 'star' system which is basically like a secondary scoring system for close rounds only. For example if the round is won clearly, the score is 10-9 as usual, but if the round is very close but with a slight edge either way the score may be 10*-10 (so the fighter that gets the star was the better fighter, but not enough to warrent a 10-9.

Some good info in this article, but i disagree with a few of the key points.

First off, having a pilot over regional title fights is exactly the eay to explore these ideas, rather than having open scoring in title fights straight off as the MM-Bell debacle (open scoring ruined a potential FOTY there). As it is, there can be a year or so of piloting the concept, improving it without affecting anything too important.

also, the judges have to be able to decide how a round has gone - it isn't rocket science. and variation is hopefully controlled for in having three judges.

Half-point scoring sounds like a great idea, but I would have to read more about it before giving my full endorsement. However, having said that I think a better solution would be to add two extra judges.

This may surprise you but people watching a match at home often have a much better angle of what is going on in a fight more so than any one particular judge. There are many "blind spots" in the ring where even a good judge misses scoring blows. I believe adding a couple extra set of eyes would help remedy this problem.

Exactly!! and even well before that boxers fought far more rounds. Bring it back up to 15.

                  a few ideas

Instead of making hald numbers, why not jst use the full range of 10 points?
                  • No even rounds.
                  • Close rounds 10-9
                  • Decisive rounds 10-8
                  • KD 10-7 and down

Make all fights have odd number rounds.
If they made no other changes, create majority round ranking for draws. Thus, after each round, the fighter who got 2/3+ judges gets a point for the round. If the fight is a draw, go to the majority rounds to determine who won.

It would be interesting to see how this stacks up to some of the recent draws.
