  • Is Half-Point Scoring The Solution For Boxing?

By Keith Idec - The World Boxing Association announced Thursday on its website that it intends to implement a new half-point scoring system for regional title fights it sanctions.

The Venezuela-based organization decided to move forward with this scoring initiative after its judges and rules supervisors conferred during the WBA's annual convention, held Oct. 7-12 in Chengdu, China. WBA president Gilberto Mendoza and his cohorts believe this scoring system could "revolutionize boxing by giving judges an extra tool that will help avoid draws and unfair results." They think that by granting judges opportunities to add or subtract half-points to their scorecards that judges won't be restricted to simply scoring 10-9 rounds for winners of rounds that don't include knockdowns, regardless of whether a three-minute period was dominated by one fighter or closely contested. No. One extra deciding round is the solution. They fought 15 before, so don't gimme **** about 13 rounds being too much. TRAIN, Goddamnit!

While an odd number of rounds helps; I think a more well defined scoring system for judges to follow would be appropriate. Everybody sees the same fight... they choose to judge it based upon what they fell is more important. That shouldn't be the case. They should all be watching the same fight and scoring it the same way. Judges swings as to who win what rounds is disturbing.

True, but that's harder and less possible to fix. It'd be like saying.. "Hey, all of you think the same way." It's difficult to set that up, honestly. One final round, makes for a good tie breaker, and in my opinion, is as close as you'll get to fair.

I agree, way too many draws with this even number of rounds. Hell in Johnson's day they fought 45 rounds, and today's fighters have a much better diet and training regimen.

I agree it's dificult, but opening up even more **** for interpretation, like this article is reporting, is the opposite way to go.

LOOSER GUIDELINES... JUST TRY TO HAVE SIMILAR SCORE CARDS!!!

              It's silly.

I think half point rounds isnt the solutions.

                  15 rounds should return...

the refs and doctors are MUCH more cautious these days so i dont believe boxer's would be REALLY hurt.

                  it just takes common sense.

I agree. Half points just make it more difficult for otherwise confused judges.15 rounds is perfect for championship bouts. 12 rounds with refs stopping fights on a shoeshine has watered down the sport. And, what happened to the standing 8 count? It's disappeared. That would be infinitely preferable to the shoeshine stoppage along the ropes.

And, most importantly, something has to be done about all the damn belts. It would take an act of congress, but the sport needs one ultimate championship for the weight classes.

Lastly, they need to get rid of the juniors and supers in the weight divisions. Go back to the original weights and simplify.

If the boxing commission in each state would get together and arrive at one unified policy then alot of these problems could be solved without having to have an act of congress.
