It never ceases to amaze me what HBO and a good promoter can do with sub par competition and a television.

Jones was a GOD, Hopkins was a GOD, and now it's Floyd mayweather.

Yeah, it'll be an easy night for GOD!
this has to be the most ignorant, crock of **** post I have read to date on this site, HBO had nothing to do with Mayweather, Jones nor Hopkins making wins look easy, they were doing the same **** when they were on ESPN and Tuesday Night Fights. sub par competition? you consider the 10 time world champion Oscar De La Hoya sub par? o let me guess he was over the hill right? well yes he may have been past his BEST day but over the hill? don't think so, plus with all the advantages Oscar had on Floyd it was all evened out.. I ain't defending Oscar neither just so you know, I was mad as **** when he had the nerve to cite age as a reason Floyd won when Hopkins had a bigger age disadvantage and still KO'ed Oscar..

all HBO did was showcase the best in the world of Boxing and they called it accordingly, they not going to say the same **** they say about Mayweather for Vargas, they may exaggerate sometimes but one thing is one Roy, B-Hop and Floyd live up to their hype, Especially Roy who for the 1st time since probably Willie Pep was able to go rounds without being hit once, no punches landed on him, which is simply amazing.. you need to drop the hate and analyze **** for yourself, stop worrying about HBO and all of their opinions and who they make out to seem like what, you should stop basing who you like or hate on who HBO hypes up because it sabotages your opinion.. how can you not respect Floyd Mayweather Jr yet call yourself a Boxing fan, his fights are the example of what Boxing overall is and that is the art of hitting and not getting hit.. he DOES that and you can't respect him? that is crazy dogz.. 100

At least you are honest enough to acknowledge neither has the greatest resume unlike some others.

Good Floyd is not playing around. That towel better be ready to be thrown in on fight night.

            The networks..

hbo or showtime (for that matter) is going to get on whatever fighter's bandwagon that's steamrolling the competition. You have to build up an impressive resume before you have those networks making multi-million dollar bids to showcase your fights. I dont really think any of the fighters named in a previous post were "hyped up" anymore than any other professional athletes who are at the top of their respective sports. Like someone said earlier, BHop was an outcast (b/c of his self promotion & him being a hard-nosed negotiatior) before KO'ing trinidad (who was in his prime by the way). He went on to have other impressive victories & some questionable defeats after his accession up the marketing ladder but he earned those accolades. As for Jones, he was clearly both ahead of time (as far as his physical & boxing abilities) and primarily in a weight class where the competition simply looked subpar b/c he was on another level but at the same time you cant take anythang away from his career. The man went on to move up to heavyweight to face not the biggest or best big man but one who was not a pushover by any means and who had wins over quite a few other name brand heavyweights (in john ruiz). Mayweather is what he is (boxing's curren best p4p fighther). Not to be confused w/ its most excting, but it takes more skill to put on a boxing clinic as opposed to standing toe to toe..fight after fight..taking as much punishment as you dish out. Sure fernando vargas, diego corrales (rip) or arturo gatti may have been exciting to watch but their careers all fizzled out either while or before they reached their primes. There arent many fighters at the top of the sport who floyd hasnt faced in terms of competition or respective wgt class. He already issued a challenge to fight mosely b4 the de la hoya fight was made but shane chose instead to get "his tooth fixed" & vacation w/ his family. Now you got mosely running around saying floyd is scared to fight him as if that stmt was never made by him on national tv following his 2nd win over vargas. Provided he wins against hatton then takes on the winner of cotto-mosely (which is likely for 2008) there's not much you can say in regards to him being "overrated". You can also throw in cintron, margarito & williams, but they need to fight each other in order to increase their stock. Margarito ko'd cintron..who was decisioned by williams earlier this year..so I think you need to have them featured against each other in upcoming bouts for '08. I guess my idea of an overrated fighter might be jeff lacy or a jermaine taylor who bother either faltered or had suspect performances in career defining fights. I cant say that bout hopkins, jones, or mayweather who have established themselves in the sport and should all be 1st ballot hof inductees. 1nce

Very good post. I agree with everything besides the Jeff Lacy and Jermain Taylor opinions, I for one think Jermain Taylor was far from Hype, until this very day I still think that when it comes to the fundamentals of this sport Jermain is number 1 in the Middleweight division, the kid has ALL the tools to overcome any opponent including Pavlik as he showed in rounds 2 and 5 of their fight, he was winning in a way where it was just undeniable, had he not allowed himself to be caught in a position to get rocked I think he would have won the fight with substantial scores, no controversy.

as for Lacy I just feel like he bit off more than he could chew, he took on too much too soon and I blame that more on his handlers than on him, he only fought whoever was placed in front of him and of course if you are on a campaign to establish yourself as the number 1 guy in your division you will call out the champion and stake your claim (i.e after the Robin Reid fight) but his people should have known better, he was clearly not ready. I fed into his hype I can't even lie, I picked Lacy to beat Joe but Joe won, I knew who Joe was and what he could do but just seeing how Lacy rocked his opponents I just opted to go with the seemingly unbeatable Lacy when I should have known better, I had (still do) been watching Joe Calzaghe fight for years on top of years, even my father told me Joe would win but thats what happens when people hype you up.

I don't feel Lacy was ALL hype though because I don't think he really got a chance to bloom in the 1st place, take Kelly Pavlik for instance, this guy got his only real title shot after 31 fights and taking out the 2nd biggest force in Edison Miranda, within those 31 fights prior to Taylor we saw Pavlik go down and rise back up against Zertuche, we saw him go threw adversity and overcome it but I can't say the same thing for Lacy, Syd Vanderpool gave Lacy all he could handle before Lacy pulled the stoppage out of his ass, true he pulled it off but the mistakes he was making showed he needed more improvements, fights like the ones Lacy had coming into the Calzaghe bout were not enough to qualify him, he could have done better with more fights under his belt.. that being said I don't think Lacy nor Jermain were all hype, they both possess the tools to do great in their classes.. I personally feel someone who is all hype does not possess the tools to grow better they just stay the way they are but IMO Lacy and Taylor BOTH have what it takes to get better, it was just a bad case of management for Lacy and a unfortunate mistake for Taylor that set them back.. 100
