No Word if Jermain Taylor Retains Steward

No word? That's just another way of saying Taylor's trainer is Emmanuel Steward. Why would we be waiting on a word unless Taylor had already insinuated that he might change trainers? This is a silly article...there is an assumption already in the headline that Taylor may want to change trainers...and that assumption is based on nothing legitimate.
Yawn.Comment

Taylor needs to stay with Steward, it takes him too long to adapt to different styles, he was doing good until the 5th or 6th vs. Kelly. But he was better in that fight than he was in the Winky fight. He just got caught being macho.Comment

I've said it earlier today in the "Emanuel Steward's fighters" thread, McGirt or Mayweather are the best high profile trainers for Taylor atm. McGirt because he has the talent to sculp Taylor back into the fighter he was, maybe even a better one. McGirt has a strategic mind similar to Steward's, and hardly ever tries to change a fighter's style (except for Gatti), aside from that he's keen on an aggressive approach in a fight an attribute Taylor used to make his fights with B-Hop that much closer. I think McGirt would be able to revive Taylor's jab and help him polish up on his great handspeed and power. McGirt is the kind of trainer that improves a fighter's already great abilities.
Mayweather (sr) would be suitable for Taylor because his training methods are perfect for Taylor's style. Mayweather focusses a lot on speed and defense, something Taylor neglected to use in the Pavlik fight. Aside from that he'll work on Taylor's coordination and ring generalship (just like he did with DLH and PBF)
Roach would be a terrible choice because he usually works best with fighters that have been around for a long time and who need more coaching rather than polishing up (he didn't change the styles of all his HOF fighters: B-Hop, Pacman, DLH), so I really hope JT doesn't pick him to be his trainer.Last edited by Spirit; 10-24-2007, 03:19 PM.Comment

Problem with Taylor
The issue with Taylor isn't his so much his talent.Much of that is purely athletic however Steward insists on making Taylor think way to much in the ring. For some fighters that may work. Taylor is purely instinctual and asking him to think about how to set up punches and create space is sensory overload for the guy. With Pat Burns he really was bad intentions. He threw punches with ferocity and with clear intent on hurting the other fighter. He had a great jab that he stopped using for some reason. He gets hit with way to many overhand right because his left hand is down so low and he retreats even when he is getting the better of exchanges. Mentally I think he isn't equipped to be a champion. I believe that he should retire before he gets seriously hurt. When Cory Spinks brings the fight to you (during moments of there fight) I think that was a clear indicator of how far Taylor has come mentally.Comment

Finally
Its been a long time coming. E Steward is highly overated due to his heavyweight fighters success. Thats not saying much. Freddy Roach is not that good either. I agree with the majority here. Floyd Sr. is the best choice in my opinion. Combinations which he lacks and defense aswell. Thats wat Sr. emphasizes. If anything Sr. could possibly motivate him to become the talent he should have become. But it is time to change trainers. Good luck Taylor!Comment
