The biggest problem I have with either holding or running is if a fighter is using either technique as a means of avoiding engaging their opponent. The worst example of running is by De La Hoya in the Trinidad fight and the worst example of holding was John Ruiz post Tua. Both Mayweather and Hatton have been guilty of atrocious displays of running and holding respectively, Mayweather against a helplessly floundering Baldomir and Hatton against a virtually stationary Juan Urango, but crucially both guys won their fight by a huge margin. It may not have been the best to watch but both fights had their moments and both got particularly patchy towards the end.

On the other hand Floyd sometimes engages in "running" to make openings for attacks, and Hatton sometimes engages in holding for the same reason and both these methods can make for some exciting fights, example Kostya Tszyu or Zab Judah.

I agree i always think when it comes to a game plan a defensive fighter always get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to holding sometimes they fire off quick fire combinations and then tie the oponent up and thus stopping the counters coming back to me that is as much hitting and holding as an offensive fighter who pushes oponent to the ropes and then hits him

when a Boxer does it its called tying up

when a brawler does it its callded negative holding

running,at least during the clinch you might have the fortune to have someone throw a punch.

I would have to say holding is what pisses me off. I understand clinching every so often to catch your breath but doing it everytime you throw a punch is beyond boring. I understand thats how some fighters fight its just a headache to watch.

                  My take....

                  Running:
Throwing one punch at a time and (as someone here said) "moving" is way too boring. Sure you have an advantage as you pick your perfect shot, relying on your speed and reflexes (Talking about Mayweather of course) but you are not engaging in any kind of combat and this is what boxing is all about. People want to see a fight and not Cobra stings...

                  Holding
Clinching is BAD and results in boring fights.. but most clinches are outcomes of either inside game, when a fighter comes in, throws a few combos, than clinches to be separated by the ref. This way he is not caught with any countershots coming out and wins the exchange
Second part of clinching is the survival. If a fighter is hurt, he will try to hold on to survive the round. (Pavlik Tayor)

That would be hilarious if the whole fight was nothing but Hatton chasing after a running Mayweather only to repeatedly clinch him.. HaHa!
