Not because of DWTS, but they were chosen as football's representative when they were on the show.

And to people mentioning Holyfield as more mainstream, that is true.

So is George Foreman, but they are really old.

Floyd is the current P4P #1, which is the Lehman's guide to who is the best fighter in the sport... it's natural that he does gain some popularity because of it, right?
the casual boxing fan doesn't give a **** who about some mythical list called the p4p and who sits atop it.

It's a nice marketing ploy for people that already follow boxing but it means something different to different people

To you maybe it means the best fighter in boxing. I could't disagree with that more.

Pernell Whitaker was P4P #1 for quite a while correct? He was never any where near the focul point in boxing, that is just one example of that.

Kelly Pavlik could knock out 10 elite level fighters/top contenders in devastating one sided fashion, including we'll say for the sake of the argument Joe Calzaghe while he's still undefeated.

On the other hand you have Floyd Mayweather Jr. winning 10 descisions against questionable opposition, not always in impressive fashion, some of the descisions close, some of them controversial.

You can bet in that scenario the media, ring magazine, will have Floyd Mayweather atop their 'p4p' rankings. The 'p4p' connoisseur appreciates the type of fighter who wins with as little as contact as possible, the defensive stylist type fighter you'll find mostly among black american fighters. Fine, But in doing that they actually penalize the fighters who win in the most dominating and decisive way possible.

they champion then not the best fighters, but the best of a certain type of fighter and mediocrity.
