I don't see Cotto winning. I like the kid, but against Mosley, he doesn't have the style to beat him. He's a swarming fighter, but Mosley moves. Quick on his feet and still has great speed, with fluid combinations. He can do what Paulie did, except he's not tapping you with punches, his punches have more of a solid thud. To top that off, he has great stamina and a VERY solid chin. Mosley wins, in my mind.
Having second thoughts about Cotto/Mosley?

Mosley wouldn't be wise to mimic Paulie Malignaggi.I don't see Cotto winning. I like the kid, but against Mosley, he doesn't have the style to beat him. He's a swarming fighter, but Mosley moves. If Mosley is going to win this fight (which seems to be the slight favorite among outcomes) he is going to have to get Cotto's respect. He can't win this by trying to out box him, wearing him down until he lands the home run punch ala Hopkins/Trinidad. His best bet to hurt Cotto is to stay in range. If he uses his quicker hands to throw punches in combination, he catch Cotto in the middle of his own series of punches like Corley did....like Torres did.
Cotto tends to get this momentum where he lands a few, sees nothing in return, figures he can just start letting go head first, and then his opponent starts firing back and tags him. Mosley has the power, technique and experience to exploit that.
However, I think Cotto is going to fight a smart, measured fight. I think it'll be a lot of the same we're used to, only he'll take his time. If he can find a home for that right hand it's going to be a bad night for Mosley (even ole' Vargas was having success with that straight/chopping right in their first fight).Comment

Good post Old Gringo & I agree. I see Mosley trying to get Cotto's respect early by sitting down on his punches. I'm not sure if Cotto will be able to land his right hand often because the reach difference in pretty big. I see this fight as a battle of who's will is stronger & who can make the right adjustments to win the fight. I'm just hoping this will be as good as we think it'll be.Mosley wouldn't be wise to mimic Paulie Malignaggi.

At first I thought this would be an easy victory for Cotto and I edged him to win based on youth, power and hunger. That was in no way a knock against the skill level of Shane Mosley because he's one of the current fighters that I respect the most.
But as the fight draws closer, I'm wondering if my initial prediction for a late Cotto KO/TKO was just a knee jerk reaction due to various circumstances or not.
Cotto has yet to face any serious opposition, despite what his nuthuggers may tell you. His biggest victories were over Torres, Quintana, and Judah. All 3 guys are B class on their best day. So I'm wondering if he really has what it takes, or if he's just another byproduct of the Puerto Rican hype machine that built up another B class guy in Trinidad years ago?
The similarities between Cotto and Trinidad are there. Both are fighters who gained enormous popularity before facing any legit threats, both are guys who built their reputations on their punching power, and obviously both are undefeated Puerto Rican Champions. (As trinidad was back in the day when I questioned his standing)
I hate to beat a dead horse but Cotto is known to have a suspect chin. He's been down on the mat before by guys who don't hit as hard or fast as a guy like Mosley does. And if you take away the amount of times he's ben knocked down, he's been rocked a lot as well by the likes of Demarcus Corley.
Anyway, the point of this thread is to ask this question....Is anybody else having any kind of second thoughts about the outcome of Cotto/Mosley that you had originally predicted? Be it for either fighter?
Well, I think Mosley will win. I don't think Cotto is all that special.
Having said that, I can't complain about Cotto's opposition. He's fought some good guys, a few world class and is continuing to reach for the best.
And **** the suspect chin. He has great recovery, so maybe it's better to go down and get some time to recollect than to keep getting smashed because of a good chin.
B class.. A class.. What da feck is that?
Somebody who lose against the very best is b or c class?
How do you decide that?
If Cotto loses, he's B class? Why?
It's not a shame to lose against some of the best. It's a shame if you don't, because that only means you haven't fought the best...
Winky is clearly B-class, as he lost against Vargas (another B-class) and Hopkins. Makes no sense.
Judah is probably this era's most wasted talent. But that doesn't mean it's not a good win when you beat him.
He's still one of the very best the sport has to offer, even if it's for 3 rounds.
I'm having second thoughts about any good fight you care to imagine.
If I didn't, I wouldn't know **** about boxing. I can see how both guys can win. But I can't see into the fighters' minds and their gameplans, now can I?
I still think Mosley will win. But I wouldn't be surprised if Cotto pulls it off.Comment
