AN OBJECTIVE ANALYSIS OF RICKY HATTON'S RESUME FOLLOWS.
Kostya Tszyu - a very good fighter in his day. Hatton fought the 36 year old version who had three fights since he KO'd Zab Judah four years earlier. In fact, Kostya Tszyu had more surgeries than fights during that time. He was a badly eroded fighter. In the 2+ years since Hatton, KT hasn't fought again. He was clearly on his last legs in Manchester that night.
Freddie Pendleton - a 38 year old journeyman with 25 losses.
Jose Luis castillo - another very good fighter in his day. In his two previous outings before Hatton, he looked crappy: against a journeyman in Reyes, and nearly losing to a 15 fight unknown in Ngoudjo. During the Hatton/castillo bout, the HBO announcing crew, including Manny Steward, pronounced JLC as "absolutely shot". Lampley said "Hatton won't get much credit for that victory because of the way Castillo looked". Those are exact quotes.
Vince Phillips - a 40 year old C-level fighter.
Michael Stewart - a young fighter. Who went on The Contender a couple of years later. Michael is a career-long journeyman who is still fighting 8-rounders.
Juan Urango - A "C" level fighter with 17 wins. None of them meaningful.
Ray Oliveira - a 36 year old journeyman with nine losses. In the fight after Hatton, Oliveira lost to Emanuel Augustus.
Luis Collazo - A light-hitting , slick southpaw. In Ricky's first venture to WW. Ricky was badly hurt late in the fight and did well to gut out the win. Collazo was given much credit for the performance vs hatton. However, Collazo was dominated by Shane Mosley, thereby readjusting Luis' career expectations.
Carlos Maussa - A largely unknown Colombian who KO'd Vivian Harris. After fighting Hatton, Maussa lost to Sugar Manuel Garnica
During the ten years that Hatton has been at 140, Ricky missed fighting any of the following fighters in their primes:
Lazcano
Gatti
Tszyu
Corrales
Castillo
Tszyu
Malignaggi
N'Dou
Judah
Cotto
Corley
Witter
Mayweather (scheduled for Dec 8th, 2007)
Harris
Forbes
Mitchell
...but he found time for a 38 year old Freddie Pendleton and a 40 year old Vince Phillips.
