Jermain Taylor and The Cory Spinks Paradox

On the evening of the 19th of May, 2007, Jermain Taylor ducked under the ropes, into the ring to face Cory Spinks. This would be a snoozefest, a dance-off of the worst kind imaginable. That was already a given.

But behind the facts, the space-time continuum was shifting violently. By not facing Edison Miranda, Taylor had altered his own destiny.

    Envision these events:

Taylor defeats Miranda, maybe coming through a tough war, maybe being rocked and coming back to win, maybe gaining the respect of many fans.

In this seperate time-line, Pavlik would have faced another - someone who had not been hyped up by HBO, someone who was not the widely predicted winner. Someone who wasn't Miranda. Pavlik's win would have gone unnoticed.

Under these circumstances, it is easy to think, Jermain Taylor would never have had to face Kelly Pavlik. Taylor's big Miranda win would have allowed him one, maybe two more paper fights, before vacating the MW titles.

    Taylor-Pavlik would never have happened.

And all because Taylor chose Spinks.

Pavlik was the number one contender not Miranda. Taylor would have still had to face him. However Taylor would have a lot more momentum going into the fight and less criticism.

Good thread. Picking the easy fight can give another guy the chance to become the star.

Did not Miranda and Pavlik fight for the number 1 spot. And Pavlik therefore did not have the title shot previous to the Miranda fight?

Yeah I would have thought this too. And also, the negotiating power of the Taylor camp I believe would have kept Pavlik at bay.

Nah. Miranda was #2. Pavlik was #3.

I had originally signed to fight Miranda and Emmanuel Steward my trainer agreed this was the perfect fight for us. Miranda wasn't ready for the title fight. He talked his way out.
