  • King Wants Juan Diaz-David Diaz Next

If WBA/WBO lightweight champion Juan Diaz (32-0, 16KOs) defeats IBF champ Julio Diaz (34-3, 25KOs) and unifies the titles, his promoter Don King would then like him to face WBC champion David Diaz (33-1, 17KOs) to unify the entire division. [details]

1.5 M... How much are Julio and Juan (each) getting for the Chicago fight?

Isn't it so that whoever wins this contest gets two belts (one in addition to the one he already holds)? How much then would the winner get to face David if David is asking for 1.5?

Is David's belt the Lineal belt?

What are the marketing prospects of David vs. the winner given the reported slow sales of the Chicago event?

The winner gets three belts. David's price is way too steep. I have a hunch that Diaz and Diaz are not getting 1.5 each, at least Julio aint.

David belt was handed to him after Casamayor refused to fight him and tried to secure a rematch with Freitas.

I was referring to the belts at stake in the Chicago fight: two belts. The first paragraph mentioned that fight in particular, thus I simply used the word "this" to refer to it in the next paragraph. I'm sorry, I should have made it clearer.

There will be three belts when Diaz meets the winner of the Chicago fight, yes. The winner of the Chicago contest will be bringing in two, while David will stake one, which, as you pointed out, was "handed to him".

Given the answers you provided, I agree with you, BigPoppa...David's price is too high. Made even higher in the light of the reported slow sales of the Chicago contest.

The reason why I asked for the answer on whether what David holds is the Lineal Belt is that if Pacquiao goes up to Lightweight, he may eye the Lineal belt. Pacquiao may be able to give David a bigger payday given the Filipino's drawing power. But even with Pacquiao, I think 1.5M for David will still make a promoter take a long pause...

I disaggree that David was handed the belt. He had to face Santos for the right to fight Casamayor for the belt. And David won by tko. And this was hardly an easy fight for David. No gimme fight.

Now the next oppoent for Casamayor is the same opponet that David had to beat to secure a mandatory against then Champion Casamayor. But as you mentioned Casamayor refused to fight David Diaz. There for he was stripped as it should be. No way should a fighter be deprived of his title shot after a grueling fight like Diaz-Santos fight.

Casamayor made his own bed and he can lay in it. He is the one that refused to fight and honor his mandatory.

Lineal isn't a 'belt;' sometimes it coincides with one, but it's not a belt. It's just a historical position. It's the 'man who beat the man' etc. HBO tried to pull that trick about lineal 'belts' with the V. Kli-Sanders fight and got called on it and laughed off stage.

Oh, and I somewhat agree with Fero...if you agree to pay the steaming piles of monkey dung that are sanctioning bodies to use their titles as economic leverage, then you have to eat it when they sanction fights between guys with no top ten wins to be your mando.

There will be three belts at stake WBO/IBF/WBA. If the winner fought David Diaz, four title would be at stake.

                yes Big Poppa is correct

the Diaz-Diaz fight tonight ... is a 3 belter IBF, WBA, WBO all on the line

so the winner will have all of the above

and David Diaz has the WBC belt

but Casamayor is the Ring Magazine Lightweight Champion

and Nate Campbell is supposed to be mandatory for the Diaz-Diaz winner

wonder how it all will unfold.

King might want another Diaz-Diaz match, but he's going to have two mandatories, if not three. The WBA mandatory is PRAWET SINGWANCHA (from Thailand), and the WBO mandatory is Katsidis. This is Julio's first fight since gaining the belt, so I would imagine the IBF will require a mandatory next (that would be Nate Campbell). I don't know if King will be able to secure an optional defense from all three organizations just to allow Juan Diaz to unify with David. Even so, which would he have to defend against next? It's going to be tough for Juan to retain all three titles and still fight for the fourth.

based on what you said I would think a mandatory HAS to be next.

                    who knows though.
