  • What's your favorite punch?

    And who - in your view - has (or had) the best of each?

    My picks:

    Best jab: Sonny Liston (L) Ever so slightly edges runner-up Muhammad Ali by the sheer wrecking-ball power of it. I've seen him snap heads back, knock opponents of balance and (if I'm not mistaken) down with that thing...

    Honorable mention(s):
    1. Muhammad Ali
    2. Larry Holmes
    Best hook: Joe Frazier (L) The greatest practical exponent of the "Philadelphia left hook." It was a thing of beauty and devastation (see Ali-Frazier I).

    Honorable mention(s):
    1. Pipino Cuevas
    2. Julio Cesar Chavez
    Best cross: Roberto Durán (R) With jarring effect, he delivered the punch with remarkable ease and frequency, because it was always ****ed (for lack of a better term). It sat next to his right shoulder like a pointed gun with the hammer pulled back and finger on the trigger.

    Honorable mention(s):
    1. Muhammad Ali
    2. Lennox Lewis
    Best uppercut: Mike Tyson (R/L) With either hand, I can't think of anyone who unleashed this weapon with greater frequency or deadly accuracy. Thrown in combination, it was usually the begining of the end...

    Honorable mention(s):
    1. George Foreman
    2. Roberto Durán

      The cross (orthodox or southpaw). This has got to be the best punch out there. Roy Jones comes to mind on how to throw a picture perfect cross. The punch has your whole momentum behind it and its good night for the person on the recieving end.

      Best Jab: Lennox Lewis & Ali
      Best Uppercut:Lennox Lewis
      Best Hook: Joe Frazier
      Best Cross: No doubt Roy Jones Jr.

        Great list man. But as far as crosses go, Hearns is my pick. Ask the man in your avatar about it!

          Favorite punch: Left Hook. And nobody threw a left hook like Joe Frazier, I'm surprised Muhammad Ali's head didn't come off in the 15th round of their first fight.

          Favorite jab : Marvin Hagler. A lot of fighters have/had a great jab but nobody else's had the power behind it that Hagler's had.

          Favorite uppercut : Zab Judah. This may catch me some flack because there are others whom you could argue had a better uppercut than Zab but nobody else had the speed or snap behind it that Zab had. Not to mention the angles he often throws it from.

          Favorite straight right hand: Tommy Hearns. The Duran KO was and always will be the most brutal KO from a straight right I've ever seen. Duran went down like Apollo Creed did against Ivan Drago.

              I can't ask him, he's still unconcious from it (LOL). Still, the man in my avatar has the best, if not most powerful, ask Davey Moore's survivors, or Iran Barkley...
