Danm, thats crazy. I never got to watch Santos in his prime, ive seen clips but that is about it, i hope he still has some of his youth left.

Santos is the Puerto Rican Winky Wright. At one time even Winky refused to fight Santos.

            Jose Rivera TO RETIRE!

Jose Antonio Rivera, a role model for youngsters but a boxer who has been known to turn down big fights, told his local newspaper that tomorrow night's WBA junior middleweight eliminator bout will be his last fight, even if he wins. Rivera held the WBA 154-pound title but lost it to Travis Simms, who lost it to Joachim Alcine. Tomorrow, Rivera is fighting Daniel Santos to determine the next mandatory contender for Alcine. The article did not mention if Rivera intends to pay sanctioning fees to the WBA for the eliminator, which would seem to be a waste of money if he was serious about retiring. source: worcester telegram

what big fights has he turned down and why? Iceman you know anything to add?

Well.... I mean, Jose has definitely put the work in for this fight..he didnt train like a guy who is planning to retire. I think he is just very fed up with the BUSINESS side of boxing, he is tired of being used and taken advantage of by the business side of boxing. I cant go into it here, you understand, but boxing is OFTEN a shady business and that can wear on a guy after a while. It could be emotion talking, you never know, but Jose has been at this for a long time and has other things going on inhis life. All I know is this..he WANTS to win this fight badly, he really does and if his preparation is any indication then he will come out both guns blazing tomorrow. (and if he wins and decides to keep fighting, it wont surprise me a bit).

Also... I HATE when reporters write things like that... Jose ducked fights? Man, listen... Jose Rivera had afight lined up with Vargas and was forced to pull out because of injury....he had SURGERY actually, OK? ANOTHER FIGHT IN vEGAS he got very sick while in Vegas A COUPLE DAYS BEFORE THE FIGHT AND A DOCTOR PULLED HIM. Then he was in NYC to fight Mayorga AND mAYORGA CAME IN VERY VERY HEAVY AND THE FIGHT WAS EVENTUALLY SCRATHED EVEN THOUGH Jose was the one who told his manager at THE TIME TO GO AHEAD AND MAKE THE FIGHT ANYWAY (JOSE WAS STILL GOING TO GET HIS ORIGINAL PURSE AND BE ABLE TO KEEP HIS TITLE BECAUSE Mayorga was overweight!). This is another terrible instance where a reporter or media outlet gets a hold of misconstrued or just plain false info and takes it as fact.

Iceman, how does Rivera do it with work and training for a fight? Especially at the level he's at. Does he get time off to just prepare for the fight or does he still work the 9-5 and train the same day?

To tell u the truth, Jose works full time on his feet all day and just goes to the gym afterwards. Then goes home and eats......then does it again the next day. Been doing that for a while. Not telling you as an excuse...just saying it is what it is. A lot of fighters have the true luxury of going totraining camp, etc etc....but Clay-Bey and Jose are two examples of guys who have had to work full time (Clay works third shift and was doing so when I trained him) and then go train afterwards. Run in the morning before work, etc etc. THAT is a tough, tough life, especially at that level, u know?
