I don't think it would be impossible for him to beat Mayweather.

      Not impossible.

However, Floyd Mayweather didn't get to where he is without understanding the course of direction in his fights. If Floyd can tame someone like De La Hoya with right hands to keep him off him - what does anyone think would happen to Cotto?

Just look at the Urkal fight for chissakes..

Mayweather would be forced to knock Cotto out with an accumulation of crosses and lead left hooks. He would eat Cotto up with lead power shots, and counter right hands over the lunging jab.

If Cotto could withstand punishment like Carlos Baldomoir or Jake LaMotta - then we could start fantasizing about Cotto's overall greatness..

I agree with Mech; it's time for Cotto to think about giving a new trainer some thought. Miguel needs to vastly improve his defense, and start trimming some of the fat off his flaws.

He can overpower guys at 147. At 154 or 160 he's going to have some trouble. Although there is an excellent chance his strength will be EVEN greater as Miguel Cotto moves up in weight. The question is going to be whether or not Cotto can withstand the INCOMING once he gets there.

if anyone is going to make any push to be considered a great right now its going to have to be in the near future in the welterweight division.

its (in my opinion) hands down the toughest division in boxing currently.

that division is jam packed with stars who have great ability.

i believe if someone (anyone) can come along within the next year or two and beat out the top champs and pretty much make the division non-competitive (by being so dominant) then they will at least be one their way to cementing their name in history as one of the greatest fighters of this new generation...

but they cant stop there...title unification bouts...etc.

basically there needs to be a B-hop of the welterweight divison.

can cotto do it? well he has as much of a chance as any of the top 5 or top 10 in that division in my opinion. its 100% up for grabs and its going to come down to who wants it more.

whats good for boxing in my opinion is for cotto to do it.

              why?

he's down to earth (wont be hated too much)

he'll take a cut in pay to make the good fights happen (not many fighters do this)
