Emanuel Steward Explains His Hatton Over Tszyu Prediction

Emanuel Steward: "I picked that. (Steward was the only one out of the ten experts to predict a Hatton upset victory over the reigning undisputed Junior Welterweight king.) I picked Hatton, Winky Wright, I've been pickin' 'em. Hatton was an easy fight to pick. You gotta remember - I trained Vince Phillips, eventhough I didn't work the corner. Because I got upset with him, with one of the guys in the camp. But I trained Phillips for five weeks at the camp. And the same thing he did is what Hatton did. And that was - you get these systematic fighters who fight very good, they like to technically analyze and control you with the left hand and find spots to throw the right hard with. That's how Kostya fights. You make him fight fast. You crowd him. Don't worry about it, make him fight fast. Even if he's running, he gets disorganized. He has to have time to do things, intelligent, technically. And if you crowd him, he gets all...then even his punching power is diminished. Because he has to fight any kind of way to survive. Phillips - when I trained him when he was fighting him - I just said Keep throwing long right hands, 'cause he doesn't really slip and do a lot of things - he just goes straight back. So if you keep shooting him right hands, eventually he'll get tired, his judgements'll be off. And he'll think he's fought the way he really is. And you'll keep hitting him with the long right hands. And that's how Vince Phillips knocked him out eventually.

    MAYWEATHER ADVOCATES:

Kostya Tszyu is most certainly NOT Floyd Mayweather.

When you read this how did it make you feel?

This is your opportunity to end the Tszyu talk now and forever..

I could myself - but I have Hatton.. I won't do your job for you.

Addison you dug up a GEM.

Interesting read. I agree with that 100 %. I'ev always viewed Tszyu the same way. Pawed with the left and really picked his spots on you. If you made a mistake - BOOM - the right hand would find it's mark.

Also great insight on Steward's part. He is a great commentator but sometimes leaves us hanging without any good insight. He said Castillo was shot about 10 seconds in. It would of been nice to hear an explanation.

I have Hatton 100% - but for anybody that believes that the Mayweather contest is going to be a replay of the Tszyu fight - I DON'T THINK SO.

I think Manny was saying that Castillo looked bad because 'his balance is way off' and 'he looks very slow tonight'. altho i could be getting mixed up with other fights hes called, Im positive hes said the slow thing about Margarito before, hahaha.

Manny is such a smart guy when it comes to boxing. I respect his opinion more than almost any other guy in boxing, altho I might be forgetting some people

I respect Manny and his opinions. But like a lot of what Manny says it's generally a 'hooray for Manny. I am smart.' kind of thing.

Well, what do you think Addison?

Incidentally, that Steward article was interesting for a number of reasons, one of which is that Steward never said he picked Hatton to win because he thought Tszyu was "shot" or old.

Regarding Steward's comments on Castillo/Hatton; I frankly thought Steward was so stunned by what happened that he just refused to believe his eyes. I've seen him do this before. He's a great analyst, but when things go against his position, Steward can get inventive. He's a little high on himself sometimes.

                Nice, Wiley. ^

Tszyu became shot and old way after the fact.

Hatton was a MASSIVE underdog going into that fight. The same people who said Hatton had no chance later said Tszyu was shot.

To be honest, Wiley (and I'll limit my comments at this point for the Mayweather contingent to get an opportunity to clear this up themselves.. If they can..) I think Hatton is going to defeat Mayweather based on something very specific besides Floyd's incessant need to give himself room to operate.

Besides the fact that Floyd is CLAUSTRAPHOBIC..

There's something very significant about what Mayweather does that favors Hatton. I'll see if an astute Mayweather advocate can point this out..

Thanks for that response, but you know that no Mayweather advocate on this site would dare say such a thing, even if they knew what the answer was.

And the claustrophobic thing....is a brilliant description.

I will wager with both of you guys 50k each that Floyd wins the fight.
