MMA is the best fighters, Boxing is the best boxers. Boxing has also moved away from its fight-sport roots and therefore has lost its place as the top fight-sport option, which was why it was on top to begin with. If UFC had been around in 1920 and Boxing had just as many bums and runners as it does today, UFC would have utterly crushed it. Boxing right now is running on vapors from its storied history and the few and proud boxers that know how to put the "fight" in "prize fight"(pacquiao, Gatti, cotto, Hatton, Pavlik etc...).
The market for straight up boxing(olympic style and points based) simply does not exist, just like the market for fencing is non-existent. Amateur and Pro-boxing can be compared to some extent with amateur and pro-wrestling, in that both "professional" models rule sets are designed to create an entertainment market, not strictly judge a sport(yes I know wrestling is fake, but it is fake for the same reason that pro boxers dont wear headgear).
