philly shell will get u ****ed up if ur not a master of it. it takes years and years of practice to use it properly and well. stick to keeping ur hands up and slipping and blocking punches.Comment

does anyone actually use those terms (other than the cross arm)?
it's like all those anime guys who keep thinking the dempsey roll was an actual, patented move by jack dempsey and tyson.Comment

The best defence is what works best for you. It'll come naturally pretty fast, so don't worry about details like that.
By the way, there's 3 ways of defending yourself:
1. Moving your feet. This should be your nr.1 priority, as it's better to make the opponent miss you entirely.
If that doesn't work/isn't possible/suitable for the situation, use
2. Moving your upper body. Duck, slip and lean, roll your shoulders, anything to avoid those punches. As a last resort;
3. Guard. Only catch the punches you can't evade entirely. Taking punches in the guard will hurt in the long run. It will tire you as well as give your opponent a boost, as he's feeling he's beating you.
This should be a general rule. Of course, there are specialists in every area which mostly rely on one of them. (Winky)Comment

I've never seen Taylor use it. I know he is listed in the game with that defense, but I just don't see it.
Anyways, even if people don't call it the Philly Shell, they should, because it sounds cool. Certainly it sounds better than the James Toney turtle defense.

Taylor doesn't use the "Philly shell", he uses it in "Fight Night" but that's about it. In real life I heard his defensive style is called the "Arkansas Crawdad Shell".Comment
