He was completely disgusted by the spectacle of a one-sided mismatch. Holmes pitched and Cobb caught. As Cosell described it "Cobb's face looked like raw hamburger". At that point he decided enough was enough and he didn't want to be associated with a sport that allowed such things to happen.

Thanks for your reply. Now that you mention it, that sort of rings a bell. Still, were it not for Muhammad Ali's retirement, Cosell might have hung around longer. Because Cosell's peak as a boxing broadcaster was simultaneous with Ali's peak as a fighter, they fed off each other. Ali's departure from the boxing scene might have been a contributing, though unstated factor in Howard's decision to flee.
