.....I miss him for more than just boxing. He was a MNF icon. One little **** up and everyone was ready to crucify the man. I loved Howard while laughing with and at him.

i believe it was right after the larry holmes vs tex cobb fight. that **** was as one-sided as a fight gets. thank goodness cobb was among the toughest men in the sport.Comment

Cosell was one of a kind. There may never be another like him. I got a kick out of his sophisticated vocabulary.
On a side note, Howard Cosell was so outraged by the Holmes/Frazier (Marvis, smokin' Joe's son) mismatch that he swore-off boxing immediately following the fight. That fight marked the very last boxing match he would broadcast. I'm not sure (or recall) what other issues combined for him to make such a drastic decision, but I have a nagging feeling that sleaze and Don King might have been a factor.Comment

I'm not saying the announcers don't love boxing now, but he was a VERY POPULAR announcer who loved fighting. I miss that kind of appeal for boxing.Comment

It was actually the Holmes - Cobb fight that chased Howard out of the fight game.Cosell was one of a kind. There may never be another like him. I got a kick out of his sophisticated vocabulary.

it was a one-sided beat down. a jab, right cross fest for larry holmes. cossell was even commentating that the ref is just being persuaded to keep the fight going by the cheering of the crowd whenever cobb would land a punch, but they had no effect at all. towards the end of the fight he just stopped saying anything. it was silence.Comment

He was completely disgusted by the spectacle of a one-sided mismatch. Holmes pitched and Cobb caught. As Cosell described it "Cobb's face looked like raw hamburger". At that point he decided enough was enough and he didn't want to be associated with a sport that allowed such things to happen.
