Miguel Cotto vs Shane Mosley: A Deep Look Into Boxing's Biggest Fight!
by: Roberto Souza-Suarez
On November the 10th of this year we have a boxing match that could very well save the "dying sport." When the undefeated Puerto Rican hero Miguel Cotto puts his pride,WBA World Championship,
and impressive undefeated record on the line against the living legend and future hall of famer "Sugar" Shane Mosley. The fight will be taking place in New York City in the Mecca of Boxing, Madson Square
Garden. It is expected to be a sell-out crowd and the building is likely to be an explosive place in and outside the ring on November 10th. Although the large crowd in attendance will likely favor Cotto due to the
large Puerto Rican population in New York and the East Coast, Mosley is the favorite in this fight and most expect him to win the fight.
Miguel Cotto sports a very good record of 30-0 with 25 wins coming by way of knockout. He is the current WBA Welterweight Champion and former WBO Welterweight Champion. He won his WBO title
in September of 2004 with an impressive 6th round TKO of his former amateur rival Kelson Pinto in front of an electric home town crowd in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. Cotto defended the WBO Championship 6 times,
winning all 6 fights and 5 by knockout. Cotto then, due to trouble making 140 pounds, decided to move up to Welterweight and attempt to win the vacant WBA Championship from his fellow Puerto Rican, Carlos
"El Indio" Quintana who was also undefeated. Many people picked Quintana to win the fight due to his slick southpaw style, good chin, and natural size advantage over Cotto. Cotto showed that the move up to
Welterweight was a good one as he looked very impressive in stopping Quintana in 5 rounds. In the 5th round Cotto landed a vicious body shot that Quintana could not recover from and quit on his stool after the
round was over. Cotto has now defended his WBA Championship 2 times. One time against ruggeed German Oktay Urkal whom Cotto TKOd in the 11th round and the other defense was against the former
Undisputed Welterweight Champion Zab Judah. The fight against Judah was Cotto's biggest test thus far in his career. Many believed that Judah was too slick, fast, experienced, and powerful to beat Cotto. Cotto
proved them people wrong when he once again put on an impressive performance and stopped Judah in the 11th round of a great fight in front on a sold out crowd, which I was fortunate to be a part of that night,
in Madison Square Garden. My main point here is that the two times in Cotto's career a lot of people thought he would lose he put together two of his most impressive performances. There was also the fight vs
Cesar Bazan early in Cotto's career. The main arguement was that the rugged Mexican and former World Champion was far too experienced for Cotto to fight at the time. Cotto put on another great performance and
once again he stopped his foe in the 11th round. Mosley is better than Bazan, Quintana, and Judah in my opinon and will pose a much bigger threat, but I just think you should never count Cotto out because he is
young, in his prime, and when people doubt him he puts on his best performances.
"Sugar" Shane Mosley has an impressive record of 44-4 with 37 wins coming by way of knockout. Shane has held word titles at lightweight, welterweight, and jr. middleweight. Mosley picked up his first
world title back in 1997 outpointing Phillip Holiday at lightweight before Cotto even turned pro and was still battling through the amateur ranks. Mosley then defended this title 8 times, winning all 8 fights by way of
knockout. Mosley then decided to move up in weight and went straight to 147, skipping over 140. Some say it was because he was so eager to get in the ring against Oscar De La Hoya. After just 2 fights at the
147 pound weight class Mosley got just what he wanted, a fight vs Oscar De La Hoya. The fight between these two stars from the West Coast was one of the most awaited fights at the time. Mosley defeated De
La Hoya by Split Decision and won himself both the WBC and IBA Welterweight Championships. Mosley would successfully defend this title 3 times before he ran into his former amateur rival, a man by the name
of Vernon "The Viper" Forrest. These two were no strangers to one another, they met in the amateurs at the olympic trials, Forrest defeated Mosley and denied him a shot in the olympics. Forrest brought a 34-0
record to the table against Mosley's record of 38-0. Forrest defeated Mosley by decison and had Mosley down and hurt early in the fight. Mosley was eager for redempton and went right back at Forrest 6 months
later in a rematch. The fight was much closer, but once again Forrest walked away wuth a win by decision. There is always someone that wil have your number, I believe that Forrest just has Mosley number. After
the two losses Mosley decided to move up in weight to the jr. middleweght division. Mosley's first fight at the weight was ruled a no contest due to headbutts. He then needed to make a move, and what better move
than to take on Oscar De La Hoya again in the jr. middleweight division. Mosley controversially outpointed the Golden Boy once again and won himself the WBC,WBA, and IBA Light Middleweight Championships.
Mosley then ran into another road block in his career, Winky Wright. Mosley dropped two decisions to Wright but the second fight was a lot closer than Mosley gets credit for. Many people now claimed that Mosley
was washed up and could no longer compete at the elite level. Mosley decided to move back down to 147 pounds, where he defeated both David Estrada and Jose Luis Cruz by 10 round decision and looked less
than spectacular in doing so. The idea that he was washed up was still there. Mosley than signed for a cross roads fight back at jr. middleweight against Fernando Vargas. Both fighters had a point to prove, and
Mosley proved his by winning by TKO in the 10th after swelling up Vargas' eye to a point it looked like a baseball on his face. Mosley still didnt look very impressive in this fight. Vargas lured Mosley into a rematch
5 months later. This time Mosley looked very impressive and dropped Vargas with a vicious left hook before finishing him off in round 6. After the Vargas wins, Mosley moved back to Welterweight where he feels
most comfortable and won an impressice 12 round decision against Luis Collazo, who is a very good fighter in his own right. So Mosley obviously has the experiecne over Cotto and has fought at higher weights and
against big punchers so you could say he has the size advantage as well.
Cotto has been giving the reputatation as a brawler lately, but he really isnt just a brawler. Cotto stocks you and systematically breaks you down. Cotto adapts to what is going on in the ring, if he needs to
box you then he will box you. If he needs to walk you down, he will do that. His money punch is his left hook to the body which he uses to break down most of his opponents. Cotto doesnt quite have one punch
knockout power but he has very good power and he wears you down as the fight goes on. He applies relentless pressure and doesnt allow you to take a break. It is very hard to discourage Cotto, many fighters are
hesitant to throw punches in fear of being countered, but Cotto is just so confident he goes in there and does excatly hat he wants to do without being discouraged. The only question with Cotto is how good is his
chin? Some say it is bad and some say it is good. Both can make good cases. We just have to wait and seen. Cotto is in his prime at 26 years old and is eager to prove he is the best boxer out there and that it
is his time now.
Shane Mosley is known most for his explosive speed and power. Like Cotto, Mosley can also box or brawl depending on what the opponent is doing. Mosley does seem to have one punch KO power, which
is always dangerous. Mosley is a very smart fighter who studies his opponents very well. He usually uses his jab as a measuring stick to try and set up bigger shots. Mosley also has a very sturdy chin, the only
time i ever seen him hurt was in the first fight vs Forrest. Mosley doesn't seem to tire late in fights, his stamina is good and his work rate is good. The main question with Mosley is that will the fact that he 36 years
old play a factor? Mosley showed no signs of that in his last two outing where he looked as impressive as ever. He claims he is just older and smarter.
This fight could play out a bunch of different ways. Cotto could just walk Mosley down and but a brutal beating on him with relentless pressure. Cotto could come in too reckless and get countered by a huge
shot by Mosley and get rocked and finished right there. Mosley could possibly rock Cotto at any time with a big shot. The younger Cotto could just break down the older man with his body shots and stop him late.
Cotto could possibly get rocked, and or down, and come back to win. Mosley could possible get rocked, and or down, and come back to win himself. Given their two styles, the two of them will go to war right at each
other and the better man will win. Despite who wins, this should be an unforgettable night on November 10 so make sure you tune in.
