Chris recently took time out to complete an interview for my blog. I would like to congratulate him and thank him on an excellent job and his service to the sport and boxing scene community.
An Interview with Christopher Jacobs, Boxings Biggest Fan.
Boxing addict has several representatives who are members on the Boxing Scene Forum. These representatives noticed a boxing fan, who new everything about boxing, and was easily the most die hard and knowledgeable boxing fan they had ever came across. So we decided to round him up for an interview and here it is :
BA: Welcome to boxing addict, im excited you could take time out of your day for an interview. We will start with, whats your real name and username on the boxing scene forum?
CJ: My name is Christoper Jacobs and my username is skillspaydabills.
BA:When Did You First start Following Boxing?
CJ: I first started following boxing in 1994 when my older cousin and I watched Roy Jones Jr. vs James Toney.
BA: What would you call yourself if you were a boxer? And Do You Box?
CJ:If I were a boxer (I box on occassion to keep in shape) I would call myself "Da Gift" as in, Da gift to boxing.
BA: Who is your favourite boxer and why?
CJ: My favorite boxer of all time is Roy Jones Jr.. The reason is the fact that I have never seen one fighter have all the attributes that made a boxer great, amalgamated into one person. Athletically, I think he is the most gifted boxer to ever lace on a pair of gloves.
BA:What Boxer do you think is most over rated?
CJ: I would say the most over rated fighter activley at this point in time is Ricky Hatton. I can admit he has the heart of a champion and never takes a step back but his abilities are a tad bit limited. I won't bash him by saying he hugs or anything of that sort because I believe you do what you have to do to win (if it's legal in the ring), however I do think the moment he faces a fighter he can't bully around and can box a bit, he will be treated like a fighter who is not elite.
Of all time I would say Arturo Gatti, he was an HBO made fighter that, although as exciting as you can get, he was never a top caliber fighter.
BA: What Boxer has the most annoying fans?
CJ: I would have to say Mike Tyson has the most annoying fans. No matter how many people beat Tyson they will always say "In his prime Tyson would have beaten him". It get a tad bit redundant over time.
BA:Have you ever boxed? If no. Does watching boxing give you unrealistic thoughts about taking up boxing and winning a world title with the crowd chanting your name?
CJ: I box occassionally but I do it just to keep in shape and not become a tub of lard. Every boxing fan has dreams of being one of the greats, no matter how unlikley you realize it would be to obtain such accolades, we still dream of that. You know as well as I do, shadow boxing in your mirror and looking impressive DOES NOT mean you can do the same in a boxing ring, especially since the air doesn't hit back.
BA: Do You think Floyd Beat Castillo in there first fight?
CJ: I legitimatley believe Floyd Mayweather defeated the warrior that is Jose Luis Castillo. I watched the fight at the least 15 times (hey we all have our bored days) and I score it the same everytime. I have no problem with people believing Castillo won, it was a close fight and many rounds could have gone either way but to say it was a robbery is totally false. A controversial decision and a robbery are two totally different things.
BA: Whats Your Favourite boxing movie?
CJ: I would have to say "Rocky" 1. would there be a "Contender" without that movie...
BA: What would you tell those people out their doing boxing training just to get into fights on the street?
CJ: I would tell them that they are wasting there abilities. What does fighting in the streets get you? You get no medals, you get no prizes, and you get no awards. You want those awards, take your aggressions out in the boxing ring and keep it off the streets. I would only condone such actions if it is in self defense, if you are hit first.
BA: Who is the greatest fighter of all time?
CJ: Sugar Ray Robinson of course, I use to think people were followers when everyone said he was the best. Than I saw him on youtube and read about him and realized he beat more champions than anyone in history and, in his prime, Won every fight he had been in, and avenged any loss he had.
BA: Who is the best fighter of this generation?
CJ: Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the greatest fighter of this generation. If he gets the last 4 or 5 wins against big names that he needs to cement his legacy, I think he could retire as one of the greatest ever and I don't mean top 50 I mean top 10 or 20.
BA: What do you love to see in a fighter?
CJ: I love to see heart and ring smarts, the latter being what I appreciate most. To me every fighter has heart, if you can step in that ring knowing the other guy would love to knock your head off your shoulders, you have heart. Some fighters put it all on the line though they will take a few to give you one and you have to appreciate anyone that can put it ALL out there to get a victory. Smarts are something not everyone can excel at. Most fighters have gameplans but to execute, and adapt to any style and any fighter, only a fighter that is ring smart can accomplish this and come out on top.
BA: Are the lower weights as entertaining as the heavier weights to you?
CJ: Without a doubt the lower weights are as, if not more, entertaining than the heavier weights. Most of these guys have short man's complex and battle it out until the end, they might be little but their hearts are huge.
BA: What boxer out there is a talent for the future?
CJ: I would say Andre Berto. He has speed, he has power, and plenty of room for improvement, I can see him staying on top once he gets there.
BA: If you saw Muhammad Ali on the street, what would you say to him?
CJ: I would thank Ali for contributing so much to the sport I love to watch, and for never being anyone other than himself, which I can truly appreciate.
BA: If you saw Mike Tyson on the street, what would you say to him?
CJ: I would ask him if he is on his meds, if he is, than I would ask him what he would take back from his past. If he isn't than I am taking my ass away from him across the street.
BA: If you had $50 left, would you spend it on food or a PPV?
CJ: I would buy illegal cable for 30 bucks and spend the rest on food.
BA: What is your opinion on Bernard Hopkins life story?
CJ: Bernard is the definition of going from the bottom of the totem pole to the top. He shows that you don't have to give up when you think it's all over. Perseverance can be seen in movies and such, but his perseverance was REAL. He never gave up and he kept at it and he made it to the top any way he could, and being at the top must be sweet.
BA: Where do you rate Oscar De La Hoya's Legacy?
CJ: Oscar's legacy is a combination of perfect marketing and the heart of a champion. He is known as the man who took all comers, faced the best, and gave them competition even though he came up short. He has also done alot for boxing with GBP and all the mainstream exposure he garners, definitely a hall of famer in my book.
BA: When Floyd Retires Will He Be One Of The Greatest?
CJ: When Floyd Mayweather Jr. retires he will be known as one of the top 20 greatest boxers to ever live. Also one of the most contreversial. People call him a coward and such but I know he fights the fights fans want him to see, he knows we don't think he is an ATG yet and he hasn't faced the best. He will face all of them though and he will beat a lot, if not all of them and finally gain the respect of the many people who dislike him.
BA: How good is Michael Katsidis and how much heart does he have?
CJ: So much heart I think if you hit him even remotley in his chest you will break your hand. I saw his fight against Grahmn Earl I believe and he took as much as he dished out, I hope he improves his defense because a fighter that exciting should also be able to last long in this sport, and help it out even more.
BA: What do you think of Zab Judah?
CJ: Zab is one of my favorite fighters. If you think Zab is afraid of anyone you are foolish. Zab fights ANYONE, and he does it for pennys. To Zab it wasn't about money, he really just wanted to fight people. He fights virtually for free and showed heart in his last fight. I am just sad about the talent that is wasted in Zab, if he took some of his fights more seriously I think he could of beaten any welter in the world. We all have our shortcomings though.
BA: What are your thoughts on Anthony Mundine?
CJ: I was wondering why this question took so long to be asked. He has gone from the Amateurs, to Rugby, back to boxing and still gained a world title like he said he would. When I hear his name the word "controversial" comes to mind.
BA: Can Evander win the title again?
CJ: Evander can do it I belive he will beat Ibragimov and become a champion once again. I tell people to watch this fight because history will be made and no one wants to miss out on history. I think "The Real Deal" has one more left in him and he will do what he has to do, hopefully he retires after this victory though, it would be like icing on the cake, that is his career.
