Michael Katsidis successfully defended his WBO interim lightweight title against Czar Amonsot. The Greek - Australian is undefeated after 23 professional fights. This week Michael called out Manny Pacquiao by saying he was a great, but soon to fall victim to the greatest. Has Katsidis earnt this talk of possible greatness and a shot at the number two ranked pound for pound fighter (Ring Magazine) ?
The answer can simply be seen as a brutal no. Katsidis has only had one significant win against Graham Earl a tough British fighter who was the WBO champion before being TKO'D. Czar Amonsot had Katsidis troubled a few times in the fight and made it evident that Katsidis cuts easily which is not good for any boxer. In all honesty Amonsot would not have lasted more than three rounds with Manny Pacquiao, who is in a different class.
All this talk about possible greatness is severely premature, and disrespectful considering you have a fighter in the division who is already bordering on greatness in Manny Pacquiao, who is Phillipines best fighter. Furthermore Katsidis has been telling the media that he is going to bash Manny when in the ring with him, calls which are disrespectful to a classy champ.
Michael Katsidis has guts, heart and determination which are big positives to have as a fighter. But so does Manny Pacquiao. Katsidis has power but has a severe shortage of hand speed, and he is easy to hit as seen by his last fight. For most of Katsidis fights his defence has been non-existent, as he has been that confident in his attacking arsenal. Attempting to draw his opponent into exchanges. But such tactics won't work against the best, a non-existent defence and poor hand speed would inevitably lead to him being stopped by Manny Pacquiao early.
The talk of Michael Katsidis bordering on greatness need to stop. He also has no right to call out Manny Pacquiao, who is by far a more complete boxer than Katsidis at this stage. Katsidis does have heart and in a few years he may beat Manny, but for the current time period i would advise Michael to head down a different path. Fighting other opponents. He still has a long way to improve as a boxer, as he has not hit his peak. But calling out Manny, is blatantly disrespectful, and it would be a poor career decision.
