And rightfully so. I'm just wondering who paid Chagaev to withdraw, Holyfield team or Wlad (to set up the unification with Chagaev, which would mean a much bigger payday for him). -
I dont think he was payed off. Boxing is a dirty game and I don't think the wladimir unification will happen, showing that he didn't get payed off for the unification with wladimir and was actually sick.Comment

It was obviously Don King who paid Chagaev off so he could have Holyfield fight Ibragimov. If Holy wins it is big $$$ for him and King. Ibragimov by tko-10 in a war.Comment

2005, I don't understand the politics in play here; why would Chagaev hold out for a more difficult fight in Klitshcko. It seems to me, he could've beaten Sultan and make some good money doing so and then face Klitshcko and make some more money...

Maybe not, though. If he were to unify with the WBO in his first WBA defense, he'd have a WBA mandatory in his next fight. The WBO belt is outside the picture as far as I'm concerned. It's changed hands four times in two years, and no one on their list is really at the top of the division.

If Wlad's team offered him the step aside money, in the amount roughly the same as his pay for the Ibragimov fight, and guaranteed him good pay for the unification fight, he is in the win-win situation. If he loses, he will be beaten by arguably the best HW in the division, leaving him highly ranked and with a ****load of money. If he wins - he is the king and will be able to secure high profile fights in the future. Everybody wins in this situation except Ibragimov

Good points. I think a Wlad fight is a perfect opportunity for Chagaev to showcase his skills. He's likely to get hit hard at some point, but after four consecutive fights of Wlad making everyone look helpless, a half-dozen competitive rounds will make Chagaev look outstanding. He'll be rated at the top by every organization, and he'll eventually get a chance at the other two belts if he loses his WBA to Wlad.My thinking:

Chagaev did the smart thing. Him against Wlad is a better fight imo, and he probably made some money to step aside anyway.Comment

Very true, he had the possibility of losing to Ibragimov and losing out on fighting Wlad for big bucks and exposure, although it was dirty, it was a good idea to make.Comment
