Is SWIMMING better for you then RUNNING?

I was told this morning that Swimming is better for a fighter, CONIDITION and STAMINA wise (not better for losing weight and making weight)

Is this true? I know Kelly Pavlik swims and he has great stamina and Roberto Duran used to swim and he has great stamina.

The reason they say its better is because you must hold your breath for minutes at a time sometimes, WHILE your getting a workout you would get from Running. AND, your working your upperbody as well as your lowerbody.

However, its not good for sweating off pounds cause your cooling yourself off with the water

It is good because running causes more damage to your body than swimming.

Swimming is better, but it's harder for a fighter to make weight because it increases your appetite twice as much as running does.

Running builds stamina better than swimming. Swimmers run to get in shape.

But swimming has advantages that running doesn't have: breath control, works shoulders/upper arms better, no impact/joint damage, etc.

There really is no substitute for running. You can reduce running... but I would be loathe to eliminate it.

swimmers run cause you dont need a pool to run. And if you can do both why not? its a better workout imo

True, but...Swimmers run because it is easier to achieve anerobic capacity.

The energy expended during a full-out 100M sprint , for example, is almost impossible to replicate in a swimming pool.

We had a swim team at my school. They would do wind sprints to improve their "top end".

Running is the one exercise where you have to propel your full 200 pound bodyweight. Not biking. Not swimming.

I haven't even gotten into the efficiency/kinetics/ hydrodynamics issues.
