you could be right that benn may not have got up for the count if the ref let him take mroe of a beating, but benn has a nice weaving defence and has a lot fo heart. sometimes there are worse decisions than that. the ref was french and i dunno if thats how they ref in france.

Yes. Under certain guidelines set out by the WBC, a fighter has up to 20 seconds to climb back into the ring and be ready to continue. When Rahman was knocked out of the ring in his first fight with Maskaev, the ref counted to 20, of course Hasim was still on the floor at ring side, but he was given the 20 count. Having said that, I'm not too sure when this ruling came in.
You have to be knocked completely out of the ring to get the 20 count Benn was still on the apron so it didn't count.Comment

All im saying is, the ref holding McClellan back for 2 seconds shouldnt overshadow Benns display. McClellan still had time to finish Benn off in the first but his attacks throughout the fight were poor. His punching power could have KO'd Benn at any second, yet he failed to put his shots together.
There arent too many fighters who could have taken such a beating and come back so strong in the following round.Comment

If you watch the fight closely, Benn hits him with a counterpunch to the top of McClellan's head in the FIRST round and McClellan looks like he's been hit with a pipe or something. He definitely had a problem coming into this fight and was said to have fought a heavy punching Julian Jackson weeks before.Comment

He was rubbish. But Benn earned the win by getting back up and getting himself back into the fight. There was no saying that Gerald was going to finish him off if the ref didnt keep giving him the extra 2 seconds or so. The ref was more inept and unorthodox than he was a cheater.Comment

This is my favourite fight. I like to watch the fight at least once a week - sometimes I watch it a couple of times a day.
I think the ref did give Benn a couple more seconds than he should have but it was obviously the correct thing to do. Well done ref.
I can also remember the British commentators shouting "He's quit, he's quit" when McLellan went down on one knee blinking furiously. Although I thought that was a bit harsh after what happened to the G Man, but I suppose it's technically correct. He did quit.
I find it hard to have any sympathy for McLellan either. He was a very nasty piece of work and I think this may have been the lord dishing out a helping of Karma. Anyway, what is done is done.
Well done Nigel BennComment
