    Nigel Benn V Gerald McClelland

this was my first ever fight i saw in 1995. nigel benn was a great british boxer and mg had a lot of hype when he came to the uk. unfortunately he had brain damage after the fight, but this was a proper war. btw benn had a broken jaw in the early stages too which i didnt know about until after. what heart!

that fight is depressing. I think Gerald McClellan is paralyzed for the rest of his life because of that fight.

Not just paralyzed, but he is now blind and 80% deaf as well. His short-term memory was affected too I think. Man, was he a fun boxer to watch. So much f'ing power. The only thing was, outside the ring, he made Michael Vick look like a card carrying member of PETA.

Mixed emotions about this fight. Was a great fight with a horrific outcome.

The ref was a joke, Im a bit of Benn fan but he got away with alot of rabbit punchers in that fight which should have been stoped early on.

            I agree.
But the fact that Benn fought so well after the 1st round shows the fight shouldnt of been stopped.
The ref just gave Benn a few extra seconds to recover, he went through the ropes yet was still up at the count of around 7.

Great fight but always kinda disturbing to watch knowing what happened.

Benn showed alot of Heart to get up in the first round and desevered to get up and fight on, but wish he stayed down because of the outcome.

It is said that "G Man" was already brain damaged from previous fights and ignored the symptoms during training. If it wasn't this fight it would have probably been another one.

                    Great fight, terrible outcome.

McClennan had a great chin and I think that was his downfall, as its been said the damage had perhaps been done in previous fights and I think that he 'took' dozens of bombs from from a huge hitter in Nigel Benn when really it would have been safer for him to be knocked out.

Not sure what the French Referee was doing in that fight but I don't think he 'saved' Benn I just think that he had a very poor style of refereeing.

The outcome was so sad, both fighters should have been able to sit down and revel in the display both of them put on.
Real shame and I believe it was a major factor in Benn becoming a Preacher.
