Did Margarito "Deserve" a Fight With Mayweather in 2006?

I'm sure you've heard someone say Margarito didn't deserve a fight with Mayweather. Those who thought he didn't deserve the fight pointed to his resume, which lacks any great names, along with his slow, plodding style that many felt Mayweather would pick apart.

Margarito's fans felt bringing $8 million to the table was more than enough for him to get the fight. His resume also has some solid wins against fighters like Cintron, Clottey, and Lewis.

Looking back, did Margarito "deserve" a fight with Mayweather?

Yes and I think he and Williams both deserve shots at Mayweather.

I'm not sure why he had any more claim to a match with Mayweather than Baldomir... both hadn't lost in forever... both were welterweight champions. Floyd got 10 million for his win over Baldomir, which is 2 million more than Margarito. He also was fighting for The Ring championship (the only real championship). If Mayweather had beaten Margarito, I'm sure people would call Floyd a ****ing chicken for not fighting Baldomir.

no, one should beat at least ONE name before "deserving" a fight with p4p#1.

Of course not, Margarito hadn't done anything at that point, and still hasn't.

Yes. Floyd did not have a fight with Baldomir signed until after Baldomir beat Gatti. Margarito calling him out was news just after the Judah fight. Before Badomir Floyd's last five fights were:

                  Zab Judah 34 - 3
                  Sharmba Mitchell 56 - 4
                  Arturo Gatti 39 - 6
                  Henri Bruselles 21 - 2 - 1
                  DeMarcus Corley 28 - 2 - 1

Each had at least one loss in their last six fights. Only two of those fights had a title on the line (and Judah's title was a tricky one!) and none of them made Mayweather as much money as Arum was offering for him to fight Margarito.

Margarito if anything would have fit in nicely among the fighters that Floyd actually did face, so his recordl plus a career high payday meant that yes, he did "deserve" a showdown with Floyd. Once Baldomir beat Gatti that changed the whole face of things, and Baldomir was a better scalp. The fact that Baldomir equalled the payday offered by Margarito's camp was simply icing. Baldomir was linear champ, held the Ring belt and was an opportunity for a unified title, Margarito just held the WBO.

But before the fight was made with Baldomir, Margarito deserved to fight Mayweather just as much as anyone else did.
