Boxing needs it's own version of the SuperBowl or Wrestlemania.

This is obviously a dead horse, but we bring up everything else 100x over anyway.

Recently I was just paying attention to the whole Bonds and A-Rod milestone news. I am not into baseball at all, however I found myself switching to ESPN or looking to see when they were up to bat to reach their milestones.

I think the reason the "major" mainstream sports have been popular is because fans have something to look forward to annually. Something that actually means something. We have a lot of GREAT and meaningful fights this year, however they can get lost in the media hype shuffle if they are not the likes of a DLH, Holyfield or Tyson.

I like what is being done with this annual World Cup (I think it has been Mexico vs the Philippines?) Right now it doesn't seem like much, but that is something that could possibly grow into something even bigger in the future.

I think Boxing needs that week or weekend where promoters put their heads together and put a series of mega and meaningful fights. Obviously, Boxing works a bit differently than other sports in terms of politics and the fact that these guys need to heal. Their not shooting balls in a hoop, they are shooting fists in each other's faces.

So whatever big fights can be made would be sanctioned (with or without belts) and setup for maybe like two cards over a weekend.

Say it is called Boxing "Pugilistic 2007" for name sake. So it takes place during the fall, maybe in October. Whatever the big fights are just prior to that time (months in advance), they would schedule the more popular and best match-ups for that weekend. So in this year's case, that weekend might include:

    Saturday
    Mayweather vs Hatton
    Cotto vs Mosley
    Taylor vs Pavlik

    Sunday
    Peter vs Maskaev
    Calzaghe vs Kessler
    Mormeck vs Haye

    So all weekend, both nights...

-Undisputed MW title on the line between two of the best MWs in the world and both undefeated.
-A fight where an exciting legend (Mosley) faces the exciting rising star (Cotto)
-#1 Pound 4 Pound fighter in the world and WW champion vs a rough test against popular JWW champion. Both undefeated and both with contrasting styles.
-Two tremendously shaped crusierweights with power, heart and skills to make an entertaining scrap for the linear CW championship.
-The two best Super Middleweights with big country followings to unify the linear SMW championship
-Then a HW title on the line between two hard punchers where you have to believe someone is getting knocked out.

Imagine that ALL in one weekend. Since this is not a tourney/playoffs type of sport, it is more along the lines of WWE's Wrestlemania. Where the most compelling match-ups that can be made "around that time" are set for one weekend event.

    I wouldn't leave my house...and I would sure shell out $55

They'd have to charge $100 if not more in order to be able to split enough money for all the boxers.

Alot of boxing fans would love this, but think about the total paychecks of those fighters...promoters could never make that up.

Good K for the thoughtful post, though.

Not bad but then they would lose money. I think I like it the way it is. Because if there were to many big fights in one night I wouldn't be able to think straight. LOL

I wonder if they could spread something like that over a month or two. That couple of months would be like "Mega Boxing Season" or something. Maybe not EVERY fight is a mega fight. However, the season or series of fights would be more so promoted as an "EVENT" rather than a "PPV fight for a night"

The main purpose would be to get some hype surrounding the sport at a particular time in the year.

With football, even those who don't care for it find themselves throwing Superbowl parties or at least finding out who is involved. Same with the World Series.

People just like to be involved in anything pop culture to be in the know.

"Oh right! This is that week they have all of those big boxing matches right? Lets have a party. Yeah I know I don't normally watch boxing, but we can get a few people over for some fun...I think Jack and Rob like Boxing so they can come watch too"

The fighters wouldn't make nearly as much money as they're accustomed to, or the networks, TV services, advertisers, promoters...

No way you could get promoters on the same page for it anyway

That would never happen but they should do something every year like what HBO did this year with the welterweight triple header 3 awesome fights and everybody got satisfied.

I wish this would happen, but money is just too much of a factor, but i was thinking, if all the big fights are happening in a matter of 2 nights, won't many people buy the PPV's so won't that make up the money?

i like the idea, but lets not forget that the other sports you mentioned are on basic cable througt their seasons etc.. except for the wrestlemania things, but still even in "rastling" there is 4 shows a month atlesat and they are all free. Boxing's best fights are on premium television ie showtime, hbo yes there some sometimes a free entertaining fight (people you want to see) on espn and stuff. The Worldseries and Superbowl hell even nascars championships arent on pay per view and i think this is a big reason boxing is suffereing so much. You used to be able to watch fights on abc and stuff back in the day which most people that had a TV had that channel.... Boxing loses so many possible fight fans and stuff because they are mainly on premium television. Hell even UFC has a good thing going, they are on a basic cable channel being spiketv, they show old fights and then have a series to get people into the sport.... this is something boxing lacks alot i believe...... But i do like the idea of multiple great fights in 1 or 2 nights
