I would expect to see Povetkin and Chambers fighting each other.

Brock and Byrd have already lost (mentally and in the ring) and don't want any part of Wlad.

Another reason this development is great for boxing is that since neither of these fights are set as of yet, it will probably take a few months for them to happen at the earliest, and then the winners would fight each other a few months later, which could be anywhere from January 2008-spring 2008. That gives Wlad time to take a voluntary this fall and then a unification fight against the Ibragimov-Chagaev winner early next year. Please let this happen.

It sounds like a good news but...

Even if Povetkin wins over Byrd and Brock (I have my doubts about that, btw.), he would be facing Wlad with an amazing record of 15-0. I don't care how exciting this fight might sound to you guys but it's simply too early for Povetkin to face a ring veteran who's had 50 fights. ****, Wlad has had what, 9 title fights? I don't think Povetkin will have a chance in hell if his team rushes him in with that. Moreover, I think he will struggle with Byrd, unless Byrd is no longer the fighter we used to know, and his chances of defeating Brock, who I think would win against Chambers, are not so great.

Don't get me wrong, I think he is a very good prospect. But he lacks in defense and technique, which is easily fixed by a good trainer and ring experience, which he lacks. Too much too soon, IMO. The inevitable loss in the eliminator or to Wlad will also damage his career, possibly for good. His management should be ashamed of themselves for trying to milk their fighter without thinking about his future.

I agree completely that Povetkin's management(and promoters) are pushing this kid along way too quickly(maybe they want to cash in on the hype) however, when opportunites like this, present themselves you might as well seize them(carpe dien) for they are not guaranteed.

For the third time in this thread, I wholeheartedly agree with BostonGuy. Yes, Povetkin is very young and relatively inexperienced, but so was Peter at the time of his fight vs. Wlad and he gave a pretty good fight. Also, Peter didn't get to face guys like Byrd and Chambers/Brock before his fight with Wlad, he fought the venerable Taurus Sykes right before.

You have to take your chance when you get it, and besides, the IBF obviously won't hold it against him if he loses to Wlad (Byrd and Brock are still at the top of their rankings), so to me it's high-reward, low-risk for his people.

The best news I've heard in a long time. I expect Povetkin to beat Byrd, but I don't know about Chamber-Brock.

This is great yet surprising news. These are four of the better heavyweights, and they are actually going to fight in a small tournament. Nicely done IBF.

Believe me, if this Kid (who is BTW 27) beats Byrd and the winner of Brock/Chamvers, he will be ready.

Again, he is 27 now, buy the time he gets a shot, he'll be pushing 29, and with wins over Donals, Byrd, Brock/Chambers, I think it's a perfect time to get a shot at the title.

But I think we are getting carried away here.. these fights first need to happen and he needs to win.

Povetkin wont make it past Byrd.

He barely shined against a geriatric Donald.

I will wager 20,000 points that Alexander Povetkin will defeat Chris Byrd. Anyone want to bet?
