Margarito can beat Mayweather??? Who's talkin' now??

CARSON, Calif. (AP) - Paul Williams won the WBO welterweight title with an upset victory over champion Antonio Margarito on Saturday night.

Williams (33-0) was hurt several times in the 11th round and was cut over the left eye. He was ahead on all three scorecards, 115-113, 115-113, and 116-112.

Margarito (34-5) was trying to defend his title for the seventh time. He fell far behind after six rounds then rallied, but fell just short.

"I thought I won the fight. Williams threw a lot of punches, but none of the punches ever hurt me," Margarito said. "After the ninth round, I thought I was ahead on all score cards. I know I hurt him several times. I walked over to Williams' corner at the end of the fight and told him, 'You know you didn't win the fight."

Williams came out very fast and busy, and was able to outpunch Margarito in exchanges.

"I know I needed to win the early rounds because Margarito always comes on in the second half of a fight," Williams said. "But I thought I held my own in the second half."

Margarito tried to get closer to Williams in the first four rounds, but Williams held when he got inside.

Margarito had his first solid round in the fifth, landing some high quality punches, but Williams landed several clean right hands in the sixth.

Margarito's body punching began to slow Williams significantly in the second half of the fight.

The seventh and eighth were strong rounds for Margarito as the body work began to take effect, making Williams' legs shaky.

But Williams lengthened his lead in the ninth when his right uppercuts in close were very effective on Margarito.

Margarito applied non-stop pressure in the 10th and shook Williams with a right hand just before the bell.

In the 11th Margarito seemed on the verge of stopping Williams, hurting Williams several times and opening the deep cut over his left eye.

Promoter Bob Arum said after the fight that the loss did not diminish Margarito's status. Arum said he'll speak with Margarito next week about a fight against unbeaten Miguel Totto.

Maybe the question should be "Can Paul Williams beat PBF?" cause why would Floyd even consider fighting Margarito now?? I've been reading threads for months from Margarito lovers, No, scratch that, Mayweather HATERS, that Floyds ducking the man, Floyd wouldn't stand a chance, blahblahblah yakitty schmakitty!! I'm glad Floyd decided to wait & see who the cream of the crop is, if he walked in & whooped a cat that any of these up & comers could whoop, ya'll still wouldn't give him his propers. Lets wait & see who can beat @ least 3/4 guys in the top ten b4 we call for Floyd, he needs this time off to spend some of that scrilla. Now can u Dig Dat!?!?!

I have always felt and still feel Floyd would beat Margarito...Marg is tough, big and strong, but very slow, not the best inside fighter...I think his power comes from long and wide/looping haymaker type punches that he wouldn't hit Floyd with...doesn't matter if Floyd couldn't hurt him, Floyd doesn't need to buzz you to win

Hatton and Williams to me have a better chance at beating Floyd due to styles

Cotto I think has more than Margarito in terms of technique and power

Williams maybe, but I'm not feelin' Hatton against a fighter of Floyd's calibre. Hatton has waaaay too much trouble against average fighters to think he can step to Floyd anytime soon! Show me Hatton against 3 top fighters, winning impressively (either KO, TKO, or total control over his opponent), & I'll have room to reconsider. Throw Cotto in wit Sugar Shane & the winner gets PBF, can u Dig Dat??

This thread doesn't really make sense to be honest.
Him losing to Williams in a close fight doesn't give indication that he'd lose to Mayweather.
And how does that show that Mayweather wasn't ducking him? Mayweather may be more confident now but before the fight, I doubt it.

yea but wald is a heavyweight where height really dosent matter cause they are all tall except for a few............williams has the height of a heavyweight so dont tell me his height played no factor in the fight it was prety evedint that it was the main factor

Of course it was a factor, but your taking all the credit away williams his speed and punch out put was a big factor as well, those same punches that williams took in the 10 and 11 round knocked cintron down 3 times, I first thought williams won by four rounds, but rewatched it and only and had williams winning 115-113, so it was much closer than I thought, so I understand why some people want a rematch it was a great fight.
