  • Willie Limond claims he was robbed

Willie Limond claims he was robbed of his Commonwealth lightweight title against Amir Khan on Saturday because he believes referee Marcus McDonnell gave him too long to recover from his sixth-round knockdown.

Khan, 20, only just managed to survive after the Glaswegian put him on the canvas but recovered in impressive style to regain control of the fight in the following two rounds.

Limond failed to emerge for the ninth round after being pulled out by his corner with a perforated ear drum and a swollen jaw.

However, Limond told The Herald that Khan should have been counted out.

"I'm sore, not because of the damage I did but because I have just watched a tape of the fight." the 28-year-old said.

"We sat in front of the telly. Billy Nelson (trainer) timed it.

"Thirteen seconds - the time it took the referee to count Khan to his feet. Not nine. Not even 10.

    "I couldn't believe it. I still can't.

"He should have been counted out. No question.

"He was out on his feet, although he'll more than likely deny it.

"His eyes were all over the place. He had been counted out. Only not by the referee's timekeeping. There's no debate.

"I've gone from being angry with myself for not finishing the job to angry to what I have just watched on the telly.

"There's no point in appealing. The fight's over. I lost. Only now I know I didn't. I'm gutted."

I said this at the time. He dropped back down to his knees when the ref was on 9. Limond needs to stop bleating though - he should have finished him off when he had the chance.

I'd have waved it off when Khan stumbled onto his knees.

i think he was just suggesting it was a slip rather than a knock down.. god knows why you would do that when the ref was counting. Unless Khan improves he wont beat Thaxton. He should fight someone easy now.

I think he jwent to one knee to recover better,i remember this happened with DLH when he first got knocked down,he got up,but was a bit shaken,so he took a knee to gain his composure,he then got up to knock down the fighter in the same round

When he went back down it looked like he wasn't thinking straight because his head wasn't clear. He was lucky it wasn't waived off - regardless of the reason, he went back down on his knee at 8 or 9 and the referee gestured him back up because of who he is. I don't believe he would have treated him like that if he was some foreigner challenging for the title.

I remember thinking that it was quite clever of Khan to be honest. Got up too quickly because he was a bit embarrassed about being knocked down and then took a knee to compose himself. He didnt 'go down', just took a knee. 13 seconds by a clock isnt particularly long for a referee's 10 count. They will usually count much slower than an actual second just so as to compensate for the fact that they might be excited and it'd be dreadful to count someone out in a title fight because they didnt get up within 8 seconds.

Limond can blame nobody for not finishing the job and for completely neglecting his own defence after having Khan prime for the taking.

I thought it was over at the time. I'm sure I remember the crowd thinking that too.

Everyone in my front room did.

I didn't think much of it though, when the fight continued. I assumed he was arguing with the ref about the 'push' but I mean, everyone saw it in his face that he knew he was ****ed.
