I would have to agree that Roy Jones def'ly has or had some confidence issues. Folks wanna say his skills deteriorated overnight or that his chin was exposed in the tarver fight. I actually attribute a large portion of his highly publicized losses to bad career decisions. Who has ever heard of any fighter putting on 20-25 lbs of lean muscle to move up to heavyweight then come back down to light heavy in the same year?? That would be difficult for a young fighter to do let alone one who was approaching his mid 30s at the time. Someone in his camp should've spoke up and told him it was a mistake (which Im sure he now knows). He look depleted in the first fight w/ Tarver and Ive never seen him look that winded in any of his fights incl. the amateur ranks. That type of rapid weight loss esp. when its muscle & not fat could easily send your body into shock. Who the hell, moves up from 175 to almost 200 and back in a span of 4 or 5 months?? Roy Jones doesnt have a naturally bulky physique which is why he enlisted Mackie Shilstone to help him put on the weight properly. As for the tarver II k-o..he got hit w/ a good shot and that is what affected him mentally. You cant be a prizefighter and afraid to get hit..it just doesnt coincide w/ the line of work. At that pt, he shouldve taken time off and gotten himself together both mentally & physically instead of taking the johnson or tarver III fights.
I dont like his insistence upon laying on the ropes instead of boxing & moving which is what got him to p4p status in the 1st pl. I wasnt sure what to make of him not throwin' punches & laying on the ropes against johnson other than perhaps physically he still wasnt in top condition. The way to fight a pressure fighter is to back him up w/ good shots of ya own (ala pavlik vs miranda). I think jones has to make some adjustments (moreso mentally)..but I dont think for a bit that he's shot physically or skill wise. He may be a step slower than he used to be but hell..he had such good hand / foot speed and reflexes..that his step slower is still faster than a lot of today's fighters. I'd like to see him keep that left higher and tuck that chin in more..and stop playing the ropes so much during a fight. Other than that, I dont see any reason why he cant be a force in boxing again. I dont see why he wouldnt be able to beat Trinidad in a proposed match up..he'd not only be bigger/ stronger but faster as well. Hopkins who's not a one punch ko artist ko'd him while he was still prime real estate and winky controlled him all nite w/ a jab and a straight right. I dont think Trinidad has the size and strength to handle Jones at 175 (or 168 for that matter). You're talking about a guy who did the bulk of his damage at 147 & 154 going against some1 who's been at 175 for years now. Judging from the hopkins & wright fights, Felix has trouble w/ bigger..skilled guys he cant outmuscle or run right thru.
